Judith Lowry

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Judith Lowry (July 27, 1890 - November 29, 1976) was an American actress. Born in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, USA, Ms Lowry labored in occasional bit parts in Film and TV from the 1940s until she began to get more substantial roles in her eighties. Ms. Lowry also had an uncredited role in Valley of the Dolls as Anne Welles' Aunt Amy. She had notable character parts in such films as The Anderson Tapes opposite Sean Connery, and Cold Turkey alongside Dick Van Dyke, in a role where much of her dialogue consisted of profanity.

Her best remembered role was as the acid tongued Mother Dexter in the 1970s sitcom Phyllis, which starred Cloris Leachman, and was a spin-off from The Mary Tyler Moore Show. This proved to be Lowry's last major acting role, as she died of a heart attack during the series' final season, aged 86.
