During the independecy, Duarte was exiled from the country by the Haitian government. Pedro Santana Gained the presidency due to his merits in battle. During this firs Dominican Government, an economical and social slump called referenced later by historians as "La España Boba" led Santana to annex the country once again to Spain, only to be restaured by Gregorio Luperon on August 16, 1863.

[edit] Attempt to censor

There apparently seems to be an attempt to censor this article on a regular basis by a few editors. The facts are that there is some controversy surrounding Juan Pablo Duarte's legacy and we have an obligation to at least include this information especially if there are numerous articles from reputible news organizations that have reported on Taina Mirabal's film "Padres de Racismo" about Juan Pablo Duarte. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.95.167.31 (talk) 19:41, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

This is a Encyclopedia right or a rumor mill...facts or fairly tales, it about facts and there no facts he was racist. The Haitians were, they didn't let white own land, killed off the mulatto population in there country...those are facts. 24.190.180.244 (talk) 05:19, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Claims for Juan Pablo Duarte's racism

An unregistered user has been reediting the article to denounce a supposedly unknown aspect of Duarte's life. These claims have been stated even on other articles, like the one for the Dominican Republic and even on xenophobia.

This information has consistently been removed because it is not backed by reliable sources. I will flesh out the sources given for that edit:

1. Padre De Racismo: This is a newspaper article about the controversy raised because flyers with Duarte's portrait and a message that said "Padre del Racismo" were distributed in New York City; as well as some statements made by the producers of the film. Nowhere in the article there is something that backs the racists claims. This looks like someone is trying to promote this specific news.

2. Taína Mirabal: Again, another newspaper article that does not support the point of view given. They are just reproducing Mirabal's interview. This is one person's opinion. I mean, she has the right to say whatever she wants about whoever she wants, but just because it appears in a minor online periodical publication, that doesn't make it a reliable source.

3. Los dominicanos han sido engañados: For the third time, this source is pretty much the same article, but written by a different reporter. The situation is the same, they are just repeating Mirabal's interview.

Finally, I would like to add that this information should not be included in the main article because it is only the opinion of Taína Mirabal (and maybe two wikipedia editors). Mirabal in itself is not a reputable historian. Her only work seems to be this documentary. She hasn't, so far and to the best of my knowledge, written any books, journal papers or taught history in school at any level. She doesn't even have a blog! Writing an article based on a film is like trying to re-write the history of the United States after seeing The Birth of a Nation.

Her work also seems to be stagnant. These articles first appeared on August 2007. After that, neither Mirabal or her film have gotten any reviews. Actually, if you google "Taina Mirabal", "Padre de Racismo" or "Fathers of Racism", it only links to the above mentioned articles and to wikipedia!

I understand that there might be people who don't agree with the way the history about Duarte is written, but if you want it to be on a wikipedia article, then create one that is called Controversy about Juan Pablo Duarte, or something like that. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dominican (talkcontribs) 17:50, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] we have a obligation to report

The fact is that this controversy is taking place and there has been press on it, we have an obligaton to include it. To supress this information is censorship. Taina Mirabal has gotten press and the movie has been reported on, that is a fact. She has made assertions about Duartes life and is releasing a movie about him. we have to include that in this article because it is going on. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.95.167.45 (talk) 22:54, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Why cause one person make something up we should pay mind to them...If she says the world is flat, the it is...in no history book does it says or even implies this, it not censorship...this is place for facts not alleges that what the news is for AvFnx (talk) 06:01, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

We have no responsibility to include fringe theories in an article at all. If we do include them, they must not be written as if they were fact, but clearly explained as an opinion. And, of course, controversial views such as this theory need independant sources before being listed. Edward321 (talk) 04:27, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hatred to us, dominicans

To the people that are constantly posting lies regarding one of our main symbols, please stop it.

If we, as Dominican have given you reasons to feel envy for us, remember that envy is not cause by the person or entity that the envy is feel for, but the person or people that feels the envy. So if you feel envy and because of this, hatred for us, that, as stated before, is not our fault, it is actually my dear, yours.

If you want to base the biography of one of the main symbols of our history in something that one person and her imagination created, go ahead, lie to your neighbour, to your children, but it is vandalism and disrespect when you want to put this type of unreliable information in a public forum such as this one, so that the world think that your lies are actually true.

It is not our fault that you people never got to be independent, it is not our fault that you envy us so much, it is not our fault that you have nothing better to do than try to defame us, so please I ask you, look for something productive to do with your live instead of disrespecting us. That only shows how low of a dreg you people are.

As to me, I am really proud of having been born and raised in such a beautiful land with such beautiful people. Son of black woman and 20% black - 80% white man. I'm equally proud of being of African and Spanish ascendency. In a country in which, contrary to yours, most of our population is mix. I live in the least racist country in the Caribbean and you are not able to argue such thing if you have never been to the Dominican Republic and lived there.

As to Haiti, our problems with Haiti has nothing to do with their skin, but it is a social problem. Haiti and Dominican Republic are countries of totally different cultures and the fact that we got our independence when we liberated from Haiti has more to that social stress between our nation than anything else. It is also fun the fact that you never mention the that one of our "Founding Fathers", Francisco Del Rosario Sánchez, is as well as me, a mix from a black woman and a white man, and you forget to mention the fact that Juan Pablo Duarte, which is the person you are calling racist, knew this other person very well. Too many black skin important people in our history, for a country you dare to call racist. With our actual president being mix as well.

But don't worry, I'm a really happy and loyal dominican person and I'll be coming here every single day to check if you have post your lies, so that I can change it back to the truth, because as Juan Pablo Duarte said, taking it from the bible “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”(Jn.8:32). (talk)

Sorry to tell you this but I am very Dominican. Born in San Pedro. The town with the best baseball players in the world.

Sorry to tell you this too, but the fact that Sammy Sosa is dominican, does not make you one. And to be proud of being from a place because they have good sport players says a lot about you. (talk) 02:20, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Not Hatred, Just facts

Reveling the true nature of Juan Pablo Duarte's motivations for a separte territory, does not equal hatred toward any group of people. Duarte was an individual who should be held responsible for what he has done. This is in no way defamation or slander nor lies; these are true facts. They may not push a nationalist agenda, but it still does not make them false at all. This is definatly not a personal thing. We have the responsiblity to tell the truth, even if we were born in the country. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.44.112.232 (talk) 01:23, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Probe it!

Ok, lets suppose that what you're saying is actually right. First of, why do you do not identify yourself? It is incredible what an IP can do, I mean, I already know you are Puerto Rican, I also think you are in NY, but I haven't confirm that yet, but trust me, you do not want me to. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Puerto Ricans, I have thousands of Puerto Rican friends that will tell you so. I have a problem against you! and it is only a coincidence that I found out you're PR.

Second, besides the fact that you are not even able to identify yourself, where do you get this facts from? from an interview done to ONE person? I don't know in which world do you live or how ignorant you are in fact, but one person statement doesn't make it true unless you can prove it with more than words, which is something you haven't been able to do, because all this Taina woman did was say something that she haven't back up with any facts that demonstrate such thing beyond her words. And in regard with the U.N. article. Dominicans do not have a general problem with people of black skin, because most of us are black in a way. Also as far as my knowledge goes, you, Puertoricans and Cubans have a way higher racist rate than what we do, because you're not as mix as we are. Being racist towards black skin is being racist to ourselves, because as I said most of us are black. The thing with the UN is that it is receiving pressure from the US, Canada and France, because those countries want Dominican Rep and Haiti to become one country, so that we have to deal with the economical problems in Haiti and not them.

To me, you're no more than someone who wants to make us look like racist to the world because you feel envy towards for some reason. Also you are making other Puerto Ricans (including my friends) look bad, because people will actually think that they are as stupid as you are and that Puerto Ricans actually hate us, which I know is not true.

If you bring REAL probe to back up your argument, I'm going to be the first one to support you, but if you keep posting lies on one of MY country greatest symbol I'll be the first one to show you the consequences of your actions. Not a treat, just a little advice and notice, because if you do not have facts that is disrespect and you're not only disrespecting me but other 5 millions people that actually care and the memory of someone greater than you'll ever imagine to be.

By the way, my name is Alexander "and I approve this message".(talk) —Preceding comment was added at 02:03, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] you shouldn't blame puerto ricans

Hey I'm Dominican and I agree with Taina Mirabal, so it's not just one person who is making edits here.

Also you shouldn't threaten people with violence over the internet, you can and will be put in prison. There is now a record of it and I have reported it to the authorities.

If you disagree fine, then we can create a dialoge and see how to include both sides of the story, but lets not start threatening people with violence or by hacking into their computers; that is against the law. —Preceding unsigned comment added by La romana 31 (talkcontribs) 21:53, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

Not blaming PRs at all, sorry if it was misunderstood that way!(talk) 01:56, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Duarte fue racista.

Oye mi gente,

Taina Mirabal speak the truth. Duarte fue una persona racista y los Trinitarios tambien. El es El Padre de Racismo, y yo soy Dominicano puro. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Anthony santos (talkcontribs) 22:20, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Puerto Rican?

I don't know know where you get the idea that I'm Puerto Rican, because I'm not. I think maybe some Dominicans find it hard to believe that they are some of us Dominicans that hate Juan Pablo Duarte, even if we were born there. Some of us Dominicans do have our own minds you know? Were not going to be brainwashed by schoolteachers, politicans and leaders who have been lying and stealing from us for 263 years. Wake up and open your eyes!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.44.112.232 (talk) 22:41, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

There words for ya people vende PaTriiiiiiiA!!!!!! that what some Dominicans are. Let be real how can ya talk so much trash of a man gave it all, money, power, and life. For the reason so you can call Dominican, and if true then ya not been real ya cause Dominican "is a racist name", so do me a favor don't use it. AvFnx (talk) 23:01, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

I don't agree with all that "Dominican is a racist name" stuff. To me its just a word. But my grandfather used to tell me when I was little that Duarte and the Trinitarios were racists and there used to be alot of old people in San Pedro that said the same thing back in the days.

[edit] For the record!

I apologize!, I confused 24.44.112.232 with 209.247.5.215, which is actually PR. As I said before, nothing against PRs, they are like brother to us Dominicans, I just happened to find out that 209.247.5.215 is PR. Which by the way none of you have been brave enough to identify yourself.

In regards to LaRomana31, thank you very much, but as far as I remember I never specified which would be my counter measurements in regards to their action, did I? So how can you accuse me of violence? And as far as I'm aware I haven't hack into anyone's computer to get the info I have, so how would you validate your accusations against me? You may call it childish, which I agree with you a 100% (things that makes me angry, make me emotional and when I'm emotional, I'm mostly childish and having to update a profile daily makes me angry), but it is still under legal parameters.

In regard to the J.P.D. racist thing. Again, lets suppose this is true why can any of you probe it with more than an article from Taina Mirabal? or even worse articles from the U.N. saying that the Dominican Republic is a racist country, when anyone that is in fact Dominican knows this to be false. I mean, accusing J.P.D of being racist is quite insulting, but linking his profile to articles which says that most Dominicans are racist, that goes way beyond insulting. I mean, 24.44.112.232, how you dare call yourself Dominican? I think that is a title that you do not deserve. One thing is admitting the truth about our flaws and another different thing is making up statements to make us look bad. Where did you get the uncle Tom thing for Francisco del Rosario Sanchez? I mean, do you really believe all that or you, as I think you do, have an agenda to make us look bad? and you are pretending to be Dominican so that some ignorant people sympathize with you? I mean, as I said before why haven't you identify yourself?

On the other hand, we, on the defence (I took the liberty of calling you the prosecutors) have tons of history books that can probe anything you say about JPD wrong. Yes, you may say they're all lies and are made up, because JPD, according to you, your grandfather, and lets suppose that a couple more thousand people, is racist. But that's your opinion against ours, we are the majority, and majority in democracy wins, specially on something regarding facts and truth. Considering that truth are not absolute, the most accurate way to tell what happened is when the majority agrees on something or you can probe it through science, but still science is not 100% accurate most of the time. I'm a Christian person(don't take me as the example of a Christian because I'm not a good example.), but you can all disagree on the fact that Christ was the son of God, that is something you believe because you have faith on that, but who can tell me and probe that Christ did not exist, when the Jews, the Muslims, Romans and most of the nations of the era recognized him and even changed the calendar because of him?

And if you hate Juan Pablo Duarte, the Trinitaria and basically most of the things DR represents, why don't you do an actual research and probe that JPD, the Trinitaria and all the Dominicans liberators were in fact racist? I mean, considering that Ulises Hereaux was from Haitian origins and was one of the people that proclaimed Duarte and his crew as the Founder fathers, was he racist towards his own kind as well as Francisco del Rosario Sanchez or may I say uncle Tom as you renamed him?

I mean, you are doing a great job! You're making a clown of yourself and us at the same time, because you're making all of us fall into your deceptive game.

And to Anthony Santos. I may correct you and say that the History books used to have lies regarding Rafaél Leonidas Trujillo around 30 years ago, most of which have been corrected. Trujillo was not as good as he was portrayed in the books back then, but he sure did a few things for the benefit of DR. Also I would recommend you to learn how to write in any language, Spanish or English. Or simple write in one but not both, your spelling is disgusting.

Honestly who of you accusing Juan Pablo Duarte and La Trinitaria actually have a Historian title, live in Dominican Republic or even have a college degree on anything? I mean, most of you are basing your statements on what you've heard, which is something not so educated people do. Even if you answer to any of those questions how would I be able to believe you, but if you do I'll truly appreciate it. It is better to let people know what kind of people are making this type of statements. Because if you belong to the ignorant, uneducated masses, trust me, you'll lose any kind of credibility, which I honestly think you do belong to. Being educated in the US does not count, because as far as I can remember the US schools DO NOT teach Dominican history, home school in the US does not count either! (talk) 01:53, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] calm down primo

Primo! Calmate! Its not like Juan Pablo Duarte is your father or something. You shouldn't take it so personal. he was a racist, so what! That isn't going to make the palm trees or the beautiful beaches go away. Racism is a problem in our country and we have to be grown up enough to admit it. I know it first hand, I lived in DR for many years and still when I go back I see it loud and clear.

I'm not embarrased to speak the truth. Are you? —Preceding unsigned comment added by La romana 31 (talkcontribs) 01:47, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

This how i know you got no pride, Dominicans son hijo de Duarte. I don't see the racism you talking about; where the organization like kkk in DR...name 3 you know what name ONE!!!!!!!!....im waiting. Fact matter he wasn't...where the prove, till then all trash....here my prove:

“There’s no element that I remember once reading, in anything Duarte said or wrote, that could be interpreted remotely as racism,” said Anthony Stevens, assistant director of the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute. “It’s one of those things that you see and you wonder, ‘Is this somebody nuts, who took Duarte’s name out of a bag in a raffle and decided to use it?’ ”

CUNY Professor said, you know the educated class...which your not part off. I could back up my claim, now back up yours. AvFnx (talk) 03:11, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] More than education, common sense!

People tend to confuse the concept of what a country is.

I was born, raised and educated in the Dominican Republic. I have travelled all through out the island and visit every little corner of it. I have even visited our neighbour nation, Haiti. Our half island is a place of wonder and a lot of beauty and I thank God for giving me the chance to be born and raised in such a beautiful land.

But the land does not make me Dominican at all. Dominican Republic could have been placed anywhere in the world and I'll still be happy, because people think that what makes a country is the land, or as Laromana31 said the palm trees and the beautiful beaches. Let me tell you that you are so wrong, DR could have been in the same place that Puerto Rico, Cuba or any other country in the world is and it will still be Dominican Republic, because what makes a country, and I don't think you need a lot of education to figure this one out, is the PEOPLE not the land. A Dominican person from outside the Dominican Republic (the island) does not feel like a true Dominican, simply because was not raise like a true Dominican and there is NO OTHER place in the world in which you can be raise as a Dominican, than where the country and all its people with their particular situations are, but that does not mean that the land has the mystical powers to raise you and turn you into a Dominican. One of the things I love the most about my country is how positive the people look at their own situation in a daily basis. How many times I've met people that did not have anything to eat in the day, did not have a job or even had a house and that did not prevented them from smiling to another person and laughing of a joke. I've travelled all around the globe and I'm yet to see something equal, which is exactly the same reason I love my country so much every time I travel, because I see (specially in US) people with no real problems complaining about everything and being rude to everyone just because their insignificant problems are not solved.

So Laromana31, if it wasn't for J.P.D. you today wouldn't have been able to disrespectfully call yourself Dominican and I wouldn't have the country that I have. So yes, he is actually the father of my motherland and my people and as I stated before a country its made by its PEOPLE not its land. Common sense.

Also I'm wondering what colour is your skin? I'm assuming you have dark skin, but I also think you feel inferior and have low self-esteem and want to blame it on everyone else so that you do not have to take responsibility for your own actions, but that is me just guessing, excuse me if I'm wrong, but still if I'm right you'll probably say I'm wrong anyway.

As I have stated before I'm a mix, my father is 80%white-20%black and my mother is black. I've never had any problem whatsoever because of my dark skin in my country, on the other hand, I've had that problem in other countries, including United States and France, just to name a few. Never in a Latin American country that I've visited so far though. Also, my mother is black and that did not prevented her from becoming a share holder and one of the key employees of an Spanish people own big chain super market in DR (Olé, which kind of broke thanks to Hipolito) and all this being black in what you call a racist country.

Also, it is amusing how can a country with around 98% of the population having black ascendency, at least in a certain level, be racist towards ourselves. Again, I think you're also following a personal agenda as well as the other person or as I said before have a self-esteem problem and want to blame it on the society. I should ask our mix president how did he got to be president in a racist country? How about in the United States, people haven't been racist towards you? I think I know you're answer already.

By the way, I'm NOT your primo, so if you please do not mind, don't call me that. Family and friends are sacred to me and you're neither.

And to last, but not least, thank you AvFnx for your support, thank you very much, it is good to know that there is people that actually care.(talk) 04:26, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] 27 de Febrero

Just as a reminder to all of you bloody ignorants. Today is the celebration of our independence from Haiti, which I can only thank to the people who gave their lives 164 years ago and to those, including Juan Pablo Duarte, who thought that we could be a free nation and did something about it. And you can thank him also, because you are able to defame his name and his, our, interracial country.

[edit] Nationalist Bias and Protectionism

It seems to me that there is a whole lot of nationalist bias and protectionism fueling an organizaed movement to hide anything negative about Juan Pablo Duarte or the Dominican Republic. Even in articles dealing with racism or fear of foriegners, anything having to do with listing the Dominican Republic is erased.

It funny how the Confederate States of America are looked at as racist for wanting to separate from the USA but the Dominican Republic is not when it did the same thing. If separation due to religion, language or culture is looked at as racism and bias in any other part of the world then we should use the same measuring stick in judging the Dominican Republic. Facts are facts, the United Nations, Amnesty International and the U.S. State Department are not all wrong about Dominican Racism. The fact is that it is a problem and the problem started with Duarte no matter how much spin the government has put on the story over then last 100 plus years. Its not the end of the world. To cover it up just makes it worse. —Preceding unsigned comment added by La romana 31 (talkcontribs) 23:03, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Your comments have nothing to do with why your changes are being reverted. You repeatedly insist on posting your fringe theories as if they were facts (and there's no indication they're even notable fringe theories). Information on current racial problems in the Dominican Republic is cited. Your contentions about the founders of the country, La Trinitaria, and their supposed inspiration for the KKK is the theory of one non-notable individual, Taina Mirabal. Edward321 (talk) 02:48, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Did you know DR was a free country before been invaded by Haiti...so it now the same as the south breaking from the north. We had freedom and wanted it back. By your theory any country that get invaded and conquer doesn't have the right to free it self once again. That shows you limit, you not educated, you only have no life and this how you kill time. AvFnx (talk) 15:49, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

The racism theory is interesting and I won't deny you have enough reasons to start an investigation about it, but as long as your arguments are only supported by Taina Mirabal and two local newspapers that printed an interview with Mirabal (those newspapers never said they agreed with the information), it can not be considered a reliable information. Besides I want to point out a few things that anyone who has lived in the DR can testify it's true:

  • The words "negro(a)" and "moreno(a)" may be equivalent (in some cases) to "sweetheart".
  • Dark skinned entertainment, political (including presidents) and sports personalities have been praised by all segments of society as role model Dominicans.
  • Haitians (regardless of their skin color) do not have to pay foreign student tuition fees (at least in the PUCMM campuses). Some of them even have the benefit of transportation dedicated to Haitian students. They are also included in the "Tarjeta Joven Estudiante" program.[2]
  • In the DR buildings were never built with restrooms for whites and restrooms for blacks.
  • In the DR there have never existed miscegenation laws. It was never illegal for a black and a white to get married.
  • In the DR the Supreme Court has never considered that blacks are "beings of an inferior order, and altogether unfit to associate with the white race, either in social or political relations, and so far inferior that they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect."
  • In the DR there have never existed schools for blacks and schools for white people.
  • Accent of people in the DR is dictated by region, not by skin color, that is, a black person growing up in the Cibao will have exactly the same accent as a white growing up in the same region. This means that blacks and whites did not live in segregated societies.

I could go on, but I only point this out in a Juan Pablo Duarte article to show that racism is not as it may look from outside and, therefore, Duarte should not be considered as a founder of a racist nation. At least not without proper and valid sources. Dominican (talk) 17:46, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

These are not valid arguements for non-inclusion. Segregation happend after reconstruction not before. The secession of the Confederate States of America is comparable to the separation of the Dominican Republic. Same Reasons. No matter how you try and sweeten it up. It is Dis-Unity simple and plain. Separation based on langauge, religion, ethnicity or race is not looked upon as a good thing anywhere in the world. Ever. The Dominican Republic should be no exception.

Secondly the D.R. was not a "free" country before the Haitian Liberation, because slavery was still legal. That is not a free country, it is a slave country. And the name of the "country" was Spanish Haiti, where only the white were free. If that is not racism I don't know what is. Lets not pretend. Also the Dominican Republic and Dominicans did not exist before Duarte created them, unless you are talking about the memebers of the Dominican Order of the Catholic Church. The same Dominicans that murdered Jews and Moors by the thousands in Spain.

Combined all of this with the fact that everyone who is against this being included is from the Dominican Republic. It's like having a bunch of editors from the southern U.S. editing a piece on the Civil War. Your voices are not neutral, they are very baised based on nationalist pride.La romana 31 (talk) 19:26, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Even if your staments are all true, that still doesn't give a reason for your repeated pushing of a non-notable fringe theory. And they aren't all true, I for one am not from the Dominican Republic. Edward321 (talk) 04:14, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
