Juan de Flandes
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Juan de Flandes ('John of Flanders') was an Early Netherlandish painter who was active in Spain from 1496 to 1519. Born around 1460 in Flanders (modern Belgium), and evidently trained there, Juan de Flandes became an artist at the court of Isabella of Castile in Spain painting accomplished portraits of her and members of her family in the Renaissance mode.
After Isabella's death in 1504 he turned to ecclesiastical work for Spanish churches. The overwhelming majority of his work held in collections outside Spain comes from this later period in which he concentrated on religious themes.
