Welcome to Wikipedia!

Welcome to Wikipedia, JPW! I'm Celestianpower. I noticed that you were new and/or have yet to receive any messages so I just thought I'd pop in to say "hello". Hello. Wikipedia can be a little intimidating at first, since it's so big but we won't bite so Be Bold and get what you know down in microchips! If you do make a mistake, that's fine, we'll assume good faith and just correct you: it'll take a few seconds maximum! Here, however, are a few links to get you started:

There are lots of policies and guidelines to get to grips with but they all make your life easier and your stay more fun in the long run. If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a message on my talk page or add {{helpme}} to your userpage - someone will come very, very quickly to your aid. Please be sure to sign your posts on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~) to produce your name and the current date, along with a link to your user page. This way, others know when you left a message and how to find you. It's easier than having to type out your name, right? ;)

I hope you enjoy contributing to Wikipedia. We can use all the help we can get! Have a great time, all the best, sayonara and good luck! --Celestianpower hab 23:03, 14 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Sig

The signature is for using on talk pages, like this one. Did you write the article for a school project? Your teacher should be able to see that you worked on the page by clicking on Page histroy, or you could leave a note on the articles talk page that says that you worked on that article. --nixie 01:26, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Calm down

Hey JPW. I recognize your symptoms. Many newbies experience just what you are feeling right now (myself, once very much included). My first article was completely deleted by someone within hours of my writing it. The fact is, it takes time to get past your ego and get down to the real business here of editing and contributing facts. I agree, some people will never like the "attitude" around here. But it is not elitist—it is "community": a project fully into the idea that everyone has a voice. Think about it. You put your knowledge out there for the world to appreciate, expecting at the very least that the common swine would accept your contribution as valuable and instead a bunch of (probably) dummies tear it apart and do not even apologize. Fact is, we all know a hell of lot less than we think; and damn if there is not someone out there that knows a little bit more. Edits to your pearls of wisdom are valuable information you can use to become a better person, once you recognize just what is going on here. It takes time to let go of the ego and ease into the routine. The statement at the bottom of each edit mode page tells it all: If you do not want your writing to be edited mercilessly and redistributed at will, do not submit it. mercilessly. You were warned. But you will find friends here. And your work will be appreciated. You just have to first accept that thisis a very different place than what you are used to. Hope you stick around. Your Manana contribution was valuable; just needed editing. - Marshman 04:36, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
