[edit] Summary

Photo shows John Paul II ordaining Alvaro del Portillo as Bishop in January 6, 1991 at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Msgr. Alvaro del Portillo was appointed first Bishop-prelate of Opus Dei in 28 November 1982. When he was ordained, he was given the title of Titular Bishop of Vita. See http://catholic-hierarchy.org/bishop/bdpds.html for more information.

Alvaro del Portillo was the closest collaborator of St. Josemaria Escriva in the government of Opus Dei and became his first successor after Escriva died in 1975. He was elected as successor in September 15, 1975.

The copyright holder, Communications Office of Opus Dei in Rome, granted, in their response to Wikipedia User: Walter Ching, permission for the image to be used under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, with this email:

On 7/14/2005 at 1:23 PM Communications Office of Opus Dei in Rome: You may upload pictures of St. Josemaria Escriva which are in the CD-Rom which you can access through the Opus Dei Information Office there. The photos in the CD-Rom have a clear copyright holder: Communications Office of Opus Dei in Rome.

This photo is one of the photos in the CD-Rom. Their email is their response to my request letter patterned after the Wikipedia Letter of Request Form. I am in contact with the Communications Office of Opus Dei in my country which has the CD-Rom containing the photographs of St. Josemaria and other photos related to Opus Dei. My email letter of request contained the following paragraphs:

"Normally we ask permission for material to be used under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License. This means that although you retain the copyright and authorship of the photo, you are granting permission for all others (not just Wikipedia) to use, copy, and share your materials freely -- and even potentially use them commercially -- so long as they do not try to claim the copyright themselves, nor prevent others from using or copying them freely.

You can read this license in full at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Text_of_the_GFDL This license expressly protects creators from being considered responsible for modifications made by others, while ensuring that creators are credited for their work.
