Josh Valentine (born 22 February 1983 in Newcastle in New South Wales) is an Australian rugby union footballer. He currently plays for the HSBC Waratahs in the international Super 14 competition. Valentine's usual position is at scrum half. He played for the Singleton Bulls in his youth.
Valentine made his debut for Queensland against the Crusaders in 2003, he subsequently made his Super 12 (14) debut that season against the Brumbies on his 20th birthday. That year he was named Reds' rookie of the year. At the end of the season, Valentine was named as vice-captain of Australia A, and toured Japan with them as well as participating in the under-21 World Cup in England. The following year he played games for Australia A in France in November as well as playing for the national team in the under-21 World Cup in Scotland.
After a good season with the Reds in 2006, Valentine was included in the new coach, John Connolly's Wallaby squad. He came off the bench to earn his first Australian cap against the England national rugby team at Sydney's Telstra Stadium. On the 11th of July 2006, Valentine signed a two year deal to join New South Wales Waratahs. He is taking up Waratahs captain Chris Whitaker's position.[1]
Josh Valentine learnt his trade through a young Matthew Tattis. Matt excelled, but his poor attitude and bad smile wouldn't allow him to reach his life time goal.
The real inspiration to Josh and Matt was Wallaby legend Steve Merrick (Top 10 List of Sports Illustrated Most influential Australian Sportsman Ever, alongside Mick Doohan). Steve chose family over fame and fortune. George Gregan is lucky to be one of the most capped international Rugby players the world because of Steve's unselfish decision to retire. He proved to Australia and himself what he always knew, that Gregan was not the best halfback Australia had to offer, by claiming the coveted number 9 jersey in the world cup winning Wallaby side.
