Joseph "Joe Mac" McDonald (1917 - 1997), was a veteran World War II, and a member of Somerville's Winter Hill Gang. He was born in Somerville, Massachusetts.
He was known as a tough brawler but also a "stand up guy" who ws loyal to his friends. One of the originators of the Winter Hill Gang he was close friends with gang leader James "Buddy" McLean. In 1976 he was put on the FBI’s Most Wanted List for robbing a man of his stamp collection worth $50,000. In the early 1980s, while still on the run, he was informed on by Whitey Bulger, and was arrested. He died shortly after being released from prison in 1997.
