Joseph Mar Thoma Metropolitan (born on 27 June 1931 as P.T. Joseph) is the present Metropolitan of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church of India.

[edit] Early Life

P.T. Joseph was born on 27 June 1931 being member of Pakalomattom Palakkunnathu family in Maramon, from which have come Abraham Malpan, the reformer and the first four Bishops of the Marthoma Church after the reformation .

[edit] Priest hood

Convinced of the call to serve the Church Joseph took his B.D. degree from the United Theological College in Bangalore and Protestant Episcopal Seminary in Virginia, USA. He became an ordained minister of the Mar Thoma Church on 18 October 1957. He also studied in theological institutions in Canterbury, Oxford and was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity by Virginia Seminary where he studied.

In 1975, Joseph and V.T. Koshy were consecrated bishops by Juhanon Mar Thoma Metropolitan. Joseph was given the episcopal title Joseph Mar Irenaeus and Koshy, Easow Mar Timotheos.

He was the President of the National Council of Churches in India and Member of Executive Committees of different development agencies like CASA and ECLOF. At present he is one of the senior Presidents of CCA and the chairman of CASA. He is in charge of the Niranam Maramon and Adoor Dioceses.
