Joseph Jonas

Sir Joseph Jonas (d. 1921) was the German-born Lord Mayor of Sheffield, England in 1904/5.

Jonas arrived in Britain in 1867 and became a British citizen in 1876. Until the outbreak of World War I he was one of the most highly respected citizens and employers. He was knighted during his year in office, but stripped off his knighthood in 1918 after being convicted of a misdemeanour as a result of the anti-German sentiments in Britain at the time. Also, his naturalization was revoked. He had 5 sons and one daughter. Sir Joseph Jonas died in Endcliffe house, Enfield in 1921 because of a stroke. He was buried in Ecclesall Church.
