Joseph Johnson was appointed the 8th Fire Commissioner of the City of New York by Mayor William Jay Gaynor on June 1, 1911, and served in that position until the end of the Kline Administration on December 31, 1913. (Mayor Ardolph L. Kline succeeded Mayor Gaynor who died in office on September 10, 1913)
