Judge Joseph Dwight (1702-1765) was a member of the Massachusetts Colonial Council and trustee of the Indian school in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. He served as brigadier general of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts, second in command of the colonial troops in the expedition against the French at Fortress Louisbourg in 1745, and commanded a brigade of Massachusetts militia at Lake Champlain during the French and Indian War. He married Mary Pynchon and their daughter Dorothy Dwight married Jedediah Foster (1726-1779).
