José Vianna da Motta

José Vianna da Motta (São Tomé, April 22, 1868-Lisbon, June 1, 1948) was a distinguished Portuguese pianist, teacher, and composer. He was one of the last pupils of Franz Liszt. The José Vianna da Motta Music Competition was founded in 1957 in his honor.

José Viana da Mota was born in São Tomé Island, a Portuguese territory at the time where his father, also a great music amateur, had opened a pharmacy. Moving with his family to the Mainland Portugal, he settled in Colares, near Sintra, were soon appeared his unusual intuition for music, playing and composing piano works.
