José Tyler was a character who appeared in the Star Trek: The Original Series pilot episode "The Cage". José Tyler was portrayed by Peter Duryea, son of actor Dan Duryea.
[edit] The Cage
José Tyler was the navigator aboard the USS Enterprise in 2254, under the command of Captain Christopher Pike.
When Pike was captured by the Talosians, Tyler suggested that the ship's power could be channeled and used to blast through the Talosian surface structure. According to Tyler, the energy unleashed could destroy "half a continent".
[edit] Star Trek: Early Voyages
Tyler was a hothead at Starfleet Academy. After graduation he served on the USS Tiberius under Captain Robert April. April straightened him out and Tyler transferred with him onto the Enterprise during the Enterprise's first five-year mission.
Tyler had a crush on Yeoman Colt from the first moment he saw her, though she did not learn this for some time. In 2255, Colt finally learned of his feelings for her and the two dated for some time, though they eventually broke up. In the issue "Futures", Tyler sees a vision of the future, in a TWOK-era uniform commanding a starship as a Commodore.
Tyler's appearance was drastically different in the "New Voyages" comic compared to his appearance in "The Cage" and a stand alone DC comic featuring Pike and his crew. It's likely Marvel was unable to secure the rights to his likeness, his being the biggest change from the show.
[edit] Novels
In 2254 he met Ecma of the Calligar, whom he would later marry. In 2287 he was a Commodore and insisted on accompanying Captain Kirk and his crew during the second diplomatic mission to Calliger. This fits in with his appearance as a Commodore in the "Early Voyages" comic.
