José Mujica Cordano (1934-) is a Uruguayan political figure.

[edit] Politcal role
As a young man he was a member of the Uruguayan National (Blanco) Party [1]. He was elected Senator in the 2004 elections. He was latter appointed Minister of Agriculture by President Tabaré Vázquez. When he resigned from that position in 2007, he recovered his former position as Senator for the Frente Amplio leftist coalition; within this grouping, Mujica leads the Movement of Popular Participation [2]. He served briefly as the President of the Uruguayan Senate.

He was one of the leaders of the movement called Tupamaros, a group which took up arms in the 1960's and 1970's as one of the first urban guerrilla movements. After a military coup in 1973 Mujica was arrested and spent 13 years in military prison (in a well, with other prisoners, totally isolated from the world), until released in 1985 due to general ammnesty that was given by the Democratic government that started on March 1st, after several years of military dictatorship.

Mujica married Lucía Topolansky in 2005, his partner from guerilla times, who is a also a Senator and former Deputy.
