José María Cano

José María Cano (born February 21, 1959) is a Spanish songwriter, singer and contemporary artist. He was a member of the multi-million selling Spanish pop group Mecano, with his brother Nacho and singer Ana Torroja.

He was born in Madrid and gave his first concerts when he was a university student in Madrid. There, he met Ana Torroja, who became the lead singer for Mecano. Their first album, produced with financial backing of his father, included the hit "Hoy no me puedo levantar". Both José and Nacho composed songs for all their albums, each in his distinctive style.

In 1984, José began piano lessons and changed his method of composition. He began to compose for other singers, such as Ana Belén and Sara Montiel.

After Mecano broke up, he composed an opera, Luna, which was recorded with Plácido Domingo in the leading role. This was not a commercial success, and the group reformed briefly to record a 2-disc greatest hits album. He collaborated with his brother in the creation of Hoy No Me Puedo Levantar, a musical based on Mecano's songs.

He is now focussing on his art work - which is receiving significant acclaim worldwide because of its groundbreaking characteristics. This art work is being shown in Malaga, London, Moscow and Prague.
