[edit] Early Career In Spain

Enrique started his footballing career at Levante before being snapped up by Valencia. Valencia sent him to Celta de Vigo for a season-long loan spell. He then signed for Villarreal CF in 2006 after his eye-catching performances during his stay at Celta Vigo. The highly-rated full-back enjoyed a successful 2006/07 season with Villareal before his transfer to England.

[edit] Newcastle United

On August 6, 2007, it was confirmed that Newcastle had signed him for a fee of £6.3m and he signed a five-year contract with the club who beat off competition from Manchester City and Liverpool for his signature.[1] Enrique made his Newcastle debut on August 29, 2007 against Barnsley, in which he played the full 90 minutes and Newcastle won the match 2-0. While considered a mere warm up for the Left-back, his recovery pace and calm nature was duly noted. He finally made his debut in the Premier League as a substitute against West Ham United on September 23. His appearances for Newcastle United so far have been somewhat sporadic, former manager Sam Allardyce and current manager Kevin Keegan cite the fact that Enrique is still young and settling in to life in England and the Premier League as the reason for this, which has led to midfielder Charles N'Zogbia being deployed at left back. However when Enrique has played, although making a couple of errors has performed very well in his first Premier League season. He has proved to be strong in the tackle and adept at keeping possession due to his strength. Enrique is also admired for his ability to pick out team mates with his long and very accurate passes. He has recently been linked with a move back to Spain with Real Zaragoza and is reportedly unhappy at his lack of first team chances with Newcastle, however manager Kevin Keegan says that Enrique has a a future at the club and has a lot going for him. This has been shown with him starting 6 games in a row and his performances have really aided Newcastle's recent revival under Kevin Keegan. [2]

His performances under Keegan have led him to become a fans favourite due to his effort put in and his skill at such a young age.

His nickname is "The Bull", due to his tough style of defending. He is highly regarded in Spain and he is capped at international level for the Spanish U21 side.[3]

During his first season on Tyneside, he helped his side keep 7 clean sheets out of the 28 games that he played.
