Dr. José Eleuterio González Mendoza also known as "Gonzalitos" (1813-02-20 – 1888-04-04) was a Mexican physician, philanthropist and professor. Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, he lived most of his life (since 1833 until his death) in Monterrey, Nuevo León. He established the first public Hospital and the first public university in the state of Nuevo León.
He founded the Civil School of Medicine of Monterrey, and the Civil Hospital (Hospital Universitario) of that city in 1859 and 1860 respectively. These institutions merged with other Civil Colleges to become today's Autonomous University of Nuevo León.
His name was given to one of the most important avenues in the city of Monterrey. The José Eleuterio González Avenue, also known as "Gonzalitos" Avenue, is a freeway that runs from north to south, from the Monterrey limits with San Nicolás de los Garza, where it starts as Fidel Velázquez Avenue, to the limits with San Pedro Garza García, where it becomes the Manuel Gómez Morín Avenue. "Gonzalitos" Avenue is adjacent to the medicine school of the University of Nuevo León. A bronze statue is erected in his honor along the avenue as well.
