The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (Arabic: المملكة الأردنية الهاشمية), is an Arab country in the Middle East. The country is bordered by Syria to the north, Iraq to the north-east, Saudi Arabia to the east and south, and Israel and the Palestinian Territories to the west. Jordan has a very rich history that spans thousands of years, and has been ruled by the Hashemites since its independence from the United Kingdom in 1946. Jordan is currently being ruled by His Majesty King Abdullah II, who has reigned since the death of his father in February,1999.

The ancient city of Petra is an archaeological site in Jordan, lying in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Wadi Araba, the great valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. It is famous for having many stone structures carved into the rock.

Petra was built by the Nabataeans, an ancient Semetic] people, and is best known for the impressive stone structures such as the treasury (pictured) and the monastery which are carved into the rock in the ancient city. Petra today is a popular tourist site, and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.

King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein.(Arabic: الملك عبدالله الثاني ابن الحسين‎),

King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. He became king of Jordan on February 7th,1999 after the passing of his father King Hussein[1]. King Abdullah is part of the Hashemite family and is reportedly the 43rd-generation direct descendant of prophet Muhammad[2]. Abdullah's parents were King Hussein and Princess Muna al-Hussein, born Antoinette (Toni) Avril Gardiner.
