[edit] Gay in Idaho? (my title)

Gay in Idaho frightening? I guess that's why so many moved to Arizona. --Vizcarra 00:07, 5 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] KFMS

The program schedule for a TV network is not the same as program schedules for every radio station. What encylopedia includes program schedules for each radio station? While some radio station articles list programs, that is far differnet then having a program schedule. Vegaswikian 22:46, 5 October 2005 (UTC)

Using a list makes it look much less like an ad for the station, so yes doing it that way would, in my opinion, be better. Vegaswikian 23:30, 5 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] w:fr:Portail:Espéranto

Hello,

our french portal about esperant is becoming quite mature. Would you be interested in reusing our hard work ? This is so often done in the way english 2 french in wikipedia... If you want, I can put a traduction of it in the englisch wikipedia, and then let you correct my language errors, and adapt it to the set of article present in the english wikipedia.

I guess that even though one was removed, it is obvious that the DNews was first since it's first date is 1850s, whereas trib's was 1870s. Comment for Talk:Deseret Morning News

[edit] Image:Oz-and-surrounding-countrie.jpg

I believe this image was not properly sourced or if it was, the source had been deleted or I missed it. If this is a PD image, you can re-upload it and give a full citation on the book it came from. That way there will be no confusion in the future. The image had a {{tl:unverified}} template on it, just like the other image on the page, Image:Map-of-Oz.jpg did. I am going to change that.

If images without proper sourcing are placed in articles, they will be removed and deleted per the speedy deletion process, which does not require notification. Make sure any images used in articles are clearly source and licensed. --Nv8200p (talk) 19:33, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

I posted a note about this at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (city names). That'd be the logical place to discuss general city naming. Thanks. -Willmcw 01:05, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Portal:Constructed Languages

Hi Jon!

I just saw you started a new Constructed Languages Portal. What a great initiative! I'll happily be of help, as much as I can at least (which is not thát much at the moment, alas!). Perhaps this page can be of help to you; it's a collection of links to conlang-related stuff in the English WP I've been collecting for a few months. It's fairly complete, I believe, and I'm sure it can be useful for you! (and if you find something that's not on the list, don't hesitate to add it). Good luck, in the meantime. Cheers, IJzeren Jan 21:29, 22 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Conlang template

Quote: I am working on a template for constructed languages, User:JonMoore/conlangtemplate. Currently it is under my user namespace, but I could move it to the template namespace, which is where the "Edit this template" link currently leads. I was wondering your opinions and such. It is based on the "articles" section of the conlang portal, but probably needs thinning out.
I am also considering starting a WikiProject about conlangs, and was wondering if you would participate.

As for the latter question, that one is easily answered: yes. As a matter of fact, the idea of a conlang wikiproject has been discussed before. See Wikipedia talk:Conlangs/Alternative proposal#Conlang article discussion group/studio?. Like I said then, I'm willing to participate in such a project, but my main scope of activity is still the Dutch wikipedia, and therefore I do not want to be the person to coordinate such a project. But I can think of a few people who would probably happily participate.

As for the template, I must admit that I have some doubts. First of all, it's way too big, especially if you take into account that most conlang article are relatively short. In my opinion, an article that for 80% consists of templates doesn't look good. The problem with such a template is also that it's quite hard to maintain: new articles are constantly added and other ones deleted. In short, I don't really think we need such a template. But if we create one, I think it should not necessarily contain all the info that can also be found in our Portal (heck, why would we need a portal in that case? ;) ). Instead, it should perhaps cover only the most important articles and languages.

As far as I know, the wikis in only three other languages use a template for conlangs. Here they are, hardcopied:

Italian:

Lingue artificiali o pianificate Bandiera dell'Esperanto
Ausiliarie: Basic English · Esperanto · Europanto · Idiom Neutral · Ido · Interlingua · Latino sine flexione · Occidental · Solresol · Sona · Volapük
Artistiche: Atlantiano · Cityspeak · D'ni · Enochiano · Grande Lingua · Iotico · KIF · Klingon · Lara · Linguaggi di Arda · Nadsat · Neolingua · Pravico
Logiche: aUI · Ceqli · Ithkuil · CycL · Láadan · Lincos · Loglan · Lojban · Loom · Ro · Toki Pona
Elenco di lingue artificiali - Elenco delle lingue

Finnish:

Keinotekoiset kielet

afrihili | dunia | ekspreso | esperanto | esperanto II | europanto | fasala | fasile | gestuno | hutt | ido | interlingua | klingon | latino sine flexione | lingua franca nova | loglan | lojban | mondlango | occidental | quenya | slovio | sona | toki pona | volapük

kansainvälinen apukieli – taidekieli – suunnitelmakieli – luettelo keinotekoisista kielistä

[muokkaa]

Swedish:

Konstgjorda språk
Atlantiska | Esperanto | Ido | Interlingua | Klingonska | Nadsat | Quenya | Sindarin | Volapük
Språk och språkfamiljer

The difference is of course that all those three languages have relatively small conlang sections. But if you want to make this work, I think it is necessary that we limit to the major stuff. Based on your proposal, I've made a proposal myself, basically containing only the languages that have an article in the Dutch wikipedia (which is pretty much my own personal project): User:IJzeren Jan/Conlangtemplate. Tell me what you think.

Speaking about conlangs, it's almost December. Which means: time to pick a new the "Language of the Month". What do you think? What kind of languages would qualify for "language of the month"? Only major languages, or languages with longer articles about them? Would it perhaps be an idea to switch every month between an auxlang/loglang and an artlang/fictlang? If so, I nominate Quenya for December!

[edit] Reverted Template:if

Hi

I just reverted your edit to Template:if. It had broken the normal operation of Template:book reference in a serious way (book reference uses {{if}}). Please note that if is very sensitive stuff and used indirectly in thousands of articles. Thanks! – Adrian | Talk 23:45, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

I have added your interwiki link to {{if}}. It seems to work. My concerns about server load seems not to be that of a problem. Sorry for the troubles I may have caused you. We could do the interwiki for eo on {{qif}}, which I find superior to Template:Tf. If you want, I can do that for you. What should the interwiki link be on qif for eo? – Adrian | Talk 01:05, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Esperanto vs. Ido

Okay, sounds good. It might be interesting to use this quote:

It's with the appearance of Ido on the linguistic scene that the history of planned languages shouldn't be told so much as sung, for it is here that the movement shifted gears from scholarly discussion to full-blown, fratricidal opera.

Even though it's not always that dramatic sometimes it can look that way to people. But I will go in there and see what I have to add. We might have to source it with a lot of usenet posts to explain how the relationship has been during the past few years. One thing I know nothing about though is what things were like after about 1930 or so and up till the birth of the internet. Some of the guys on idolisto though have been around the movement since the 40s and 50s, and a search on messages posted by them might turn up something interesting. Can you read Ido pretty well too? I see you've assigned yourself an eo level of 2 but I assume you're being humble about your 'meza nivelo'. Mithridates 10:22, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

Actually, check this out: http://es.groups.yahoo.com/group/IdoCatalaOccitan/message/1349 There's a good example of Esperantists and Idists cooperating, both participating in a linguistic conference and having a pretty good time. I think that's how it should always work. Each tells potential students why they think they should choose their language, but at the end of the day there are no hard feelings between the two. Mithridates 10:26, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

This one too, from before the conference: http://es.groups.yahoo.com/group/IdoCatalaOccitan/message/1294

[edit] KTVX

You have received this message because you have edited a Salt Lake City media article in the past. We have recently had an edit war regarding the wording and inclusion of a paragraph on the KTVX article. In hopes of resolving this I have put together an informal survey. If you are interested, please stop by Talk:KTVX and add a vote. Thanks, A 09:07, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for coming by and providing input. As stated in my latest edit on Talk:KTVX I am going to be unable to see this through as I will be out of the state at a conference, and not able to get away enough to facilitate. Would you be willing to finish the 72 hours of comment/survey, and then either provide a runoff vote, or at your discretion, take a final count and let the admin that locked the article know? Please post your answer on the talk page. A 07:45, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Yeah, it's me Jon

Why didn't you tell me about this? I think I might spend an afternoon merging the high schools in and adding things I know (from the packet they gave me as a sub, the newspaper, and other sources). Not now though. Cool Hand Luke 04:31, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Please help at Early life of Joseph Smith, Jr.

Early life of Joseph Smith, Jr. will be featured on the Main Page on the 23rd. Vandalism will probably be frequent that day. Could you help in monitoring the page? The 23rd starts at 7 pm ET on Dec 22nd, since wikipedia goes by UTC. Thx in advance. Trödeltalk 01:52, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Portals

I noticed you had created Portal:Language. I don't think it's worth having both that and Portal:Linguistics; one should redirect to the other. Is it better to have a broader portal on Linguistics (which I assume Language comes under), or one on just Languages?
I also have spent quite a bit of time perousing through other language Wikipedias for ideas on portals. They are mostly different to those on en:, and this is probably because they evolved from different ideas. I think on the en: the initial idea was to replicate the Main Page for various topic areas. On other languages, it seems editors were much more intent on creating portals as "entry points". Both en: and other languages share this function, but on en: portals have evolved more to display the best of Wikipedia content (like the MP) than direct to articles etc. I like the formats of many interwiki portals, and its good to portals inspired by them on en:, such as your Language portals.
However, I'm not sure interwiki portals are very self-referential. On the de: and fr: portals, I've noticed aspects which are self-referential, including "collaborators" boxes. I don't think self-references are appropriate on en: because, as we agree, en: portals are different. I generally dislike self-references anywhere on Wikipedia outside the project and talk namespaces. I think its tacky for a portal to talk of itself. Surely, a welcome note is fine (such as appears on MP), but explanations of functions and purpose are un-necessary on individual portals and should be restricted to Wikipedia:Portal. Self-references detract from content. To the extent that we are an open encyclopædia that needs to encourage contribution, self-references are fine.--cj | talk 07:31, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi Jon. What do you think of the related portals section on Portal:Art? It's similar to "Portails connexe" on Wikipédia française.--cj | talk 03:52, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

I like that too. Unfortunately, it's not showing up on the actual portal page for me. Does it for you? I'm not sure how we could combine them...Any ideas? If the subportals have sub-portals, it mightn't be necessary to show them on the main portal.--cj | talk 04:36, 24 December 2005 (UTC)
That looks good. I've forced the boxes to top-align so that it looks neater. Do you think we should allow for diversity? As in, alternate between the two singular formats and the third combined. Or should we have a standard format across portals? This could probably replace {{portals}}, which has become both redundant and far too large.--cj | talk 04:57, 24 December 2005 (UTC)
I'll fiddle with the notice. Back to Portal:Geography: It doesn't look so good contained in a box. What about just having it on the portal page?--cj | talk 05:33, 24 December 2005 (UTC)
That could work. My original intent was to arrange like categories - grandparent portal (main portal), parent portal (main subportals), and children (subportals). Parent portals would be shown on the the granparent, and the children on the parent portals. For geography, this would mean showing regional portals on Portal:Geography and then dividing the country portals as appropriate between the regional portals. --cj | talk 05:49, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Graphic browsebar

Hi. While this bar is interesting and looks cool at higher resolutions, it doesn't work well at lower resolutions. We can't assume all users have high-resolution monitors. Also, the icons dominate the bar, yet the icon graphics don't link to the portals. I tried to get them to link and line up while linked, but I just couldn't figure it out. I left the attempt in the history of Portal:Art, so others could pick up where I left off. The problem seems to be the trick used to create the link (which is done by forcing overflow of the link's text to be hidden by setting the font-size to 100px, thus guaranteeing overflow). See Template:Click4 Go for it! 13:56, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
