American slang from the late 1980's and 1990's, generally pejorative, for a person who is, or is perceived to be, unsophisticated and obsessed with Heavy Metal music. Hesher is a stereotype and characterized by speech and mannerisms of "heshers" to indicate lack of education, single-minded devotion to rock bands and lack of interest in personal hygene and education. Heshers are thought to primarily be white, male, working-class Americans.

The hesher are often considered a particular sub-class of "[[white trash]]" characterized by its interest in heavy metal music.

Like the British term "chav", and the Australian term "Bogan", the term supposedly describes behavior and appearance, more than class.

Heshers were a vital element in the Headbanging scene and paved the way for the Grunge scene in Washington state.

Common defining attributes of the "hesher" include:

  • Long raggedy hair or mullet (often bleached)
  • Tight, stone-washed jeans
  • Sculls and demons on ripped T-shirts
  • Spikes and studs
  • Use of marijuana
  • Apathetic attitude
  • Unemployed
