Talk:Jon Kennedy

{Editprotected} - handled below, SGGH speak! 21:40, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
Some factual information on Kennedy's cybersquatting and promotional methods has been removed along with the vandalism. This information was linked to a reference and was not vandalism- it seems to have been removed by a fan with a biased viewpoint. Jon Kennedy is cybersquatting at http://www.myspace.com/truthoughts and his promotional methods are one of his hallmarks and therefore should be featured in a biography of him.

- Personally, I think that removing a statement which says things like "number of controversial ways- signing people up to mailing lists without their consent, spamming internet message boards and harassing those who do not respond favourably" with nout but a single ref (linking to his own myspace doesn't count) was a good call, so I'm going to let the removal stand. However you can take it up with the person who removed it if you wish, he is User:Gram123. SGGH speak! 21:40, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
Opus 40 12:22, 19 May 2007 (UTC) Gram 123 cannot unprotect the page. That MySpace page is not his own, it is the TruThoughts page where he is cybersquatting. He has several MySpace pages of his own. My point was he is well-known as a self-publicist- more so than as a musician perhaps- so the edit should stand. Opus 40 12:22, 19 May 2007 (UTC)
- The main reason I requested that this article be protected was due to the numerous, childish and repetitive edits containing inflammatory and potentially libelous claims about the artist. This does constitute vandalism. The claims were made not only here but on almost every article that mentioned the artist's name, and were made over a 30 day period. Despite repeated removal, the non-registered member continued to make edits with the same sentiment. Had the member registered at Wikipedia, I would have left the appropriate vandalism templates on his/her talk page, and would have been more than happy to discuss the reasons why the claims the person made were non-NPOV, non-encyclopedic and entirely unsourced. These edits appeared to be little more than a personal vendetta against the artist.
- If user "Opus 40" / 84.9.236.194 is a different individual to the person who was previously vandalising the article, then I apologise for tarring you with the same brush. After the period of protection (or if you become a registered member), you will be free to edit the article.
- However, I would argue that your claim of "factual information" requires a proper reference, as it appears to be inaccurate, and is unsourced.
- Firstly, the page you mention is not the official Tru Thoughts MySpace page. The true page is at www.myspace.com/truthoughtsrecords.
- Secondly, linking to the MySpace page you claim Kennedy is "cyber-squatting" at does not constitute proof that Kennedy has anything to do with it. It is a very basic page, that clearly has not been used to promote either the label or the artist.

The vandal/s is/are not me. Thankyou for your help Gram123, but I feel some changes are needed. The "I also like free stickers" part of the quote was something Kennedy actually said and a tongue-in-cheek reference to his love of promotional stickers. I am pretty sure this wasn't vandalism as it had been there for a while- it looked like a genuine part of the quote. The guy is a well-known as a self-publicist though, like Lily Allen, Diplo and many other people who handle their own publicity and bookings. Maybe someone who has booked Kennedy can verify this. 86.157.119.65 22:45, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
86.129.147.220 13:09, 18 July 2007 (UTC) This is a talk page and doesn't have to be encyclopaedic, as it is a place for valid questions. Why are racist actions of living and dead persons glossed over so often on their pages? Are their pages being edited by their publicists? Or would people rather give money to racist celebrities than question their actions? The page on the Ninja Tune forum was definitely Jon Kennedy, he is known to be a long-time poster there and frequently uses the word "Paki" in his posts. If you're comfortable with that, carry on buying his records and editing his page to make it look more flattering. If not, you might want to think about your actions. The same goes for people editing the Bernard Manning and Jim Davidson pages. 86.129.147.220 13:09, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

- In your edits of this article (and related articles), you are not making valid, verifiable, npov, encyclopaedic points. You are making potentially libellous claims (see Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons) and citing sources that are not reliable, to back up your claims. The Ninja Tune forum is not a reliable source. Anyone can post on internet forums with any username. There isn't an ounce of proof that it is the person you seem determined to discredit, whether you believe it's him or not.
- Your continued edits in this vein constitute vandalism and edit warring. Moving your claims about the individual to the talk page is also unacceptable. Gram123 16:59, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
I have been discussing music with Jon for years on the internet. He wrote me a letter a while back promoting his myspace page. He is a very tallented artist and an internet savy individual. He has used those skills to expand his fan base in a completely legitimate manner. I have never seen Jon abuse this system or anyone for that matter. One of the previous posters nailed it, anyone can post spam on the net and give a false username. I have had someone do that to me before for no apparent reason. Have any of you had a similar experience? I ask that anyone readng this does not hold the opinion of some disgruntal immature little trouble maker with any validity. Jon is a hard working self made musician and promoter of the arts and should be shown respect for his endevours.
This is Miss Hope Eternal, you can find me at:www.myspace.com/mindthecrack. I am new to this edit posting non sense as I only joined 10 minutes ago as I wanted to support my friend Jon Kennedy. So apologies if my etiquette is below par. I have just read all of the above comments regarding Jon and I just wanted to say I have been working with Jon for around a year, promoting his music through my radio Show, The waiting Room. I have never had any reason to think bad of Jon in anyway, in fact quite the opposite. He is extremely honest, and very talented and has never once been forceful in the way he promotes himself or any of his endevours. I don't see any problem with self promotion and I find it hard to believe that other people do, this is the music business, promotion is what gets you noticed and quite frankly its alot of hard work. Jon may have more than one my space address, but he has more than one project on the go. Never have I heard Jon be racist, sexist or fascist in anyway. I have however been privy to needless abusive mail that Jon has received and even though he found it hurtful he expressed nothing but professionalism when he dealt with it. It is good to see others have written in Jon's defense as he truly is one of the nice guys as any one that knows him personally I am sure can verify. I think this is a clear case of sabatarge and pathetic it is too. I for one will continue to play Jon's music, regardless of this apparent scandal. —Preceding unsigned comment added by MissHopeEternal (talk • contribs) 13:03, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

- Your comments are appreciated! Unfortunately, the nature of Wikipedia means anyone can edit, including people who do nothing constructive, and simply vandalise. These are usually just people who want to see their own name on the internet (er... why?) or show off to their mates that they can make a silly edit. However, sometimes you get people like this guy, who, for whatever reason, obsesses and refuses to stop.
-
- In the vast majority of cases, articles are watched by one or more people, and such vandalism is reverted pretty quickly. Additional measures can be taken to stop repeat vandals, and this article is a case in point - it remains protected for the time being, so only registered members can edit it. We will of course continue to monitor the article.
-
- As someone who knows Jon Kennedy, perhaps you (or he) would consider registering at Wikipedia and adding some info to the article itself? I've tried to improve it over time, but it's not so easy to find more info and the article remains a little basic. Any info should have encyclopedic value (you can't just say "he's great!"), preferably with references cited. A photo would be useful too - but Wikipedia requires that to use photos of living people, the copyright holder must grant permission to "copy, distribute and/or modify", to cover their backs in the event of, for example, the encyclopedia being distributed on disc in the future.
-
- Once again, thanks for your comments. Gram123 11:18, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

- The help page for images is at: Help:Contents/Images and media.
In particular, you may want to look at: Wikipedia:Uploading images and Wikipedia:Image use policy.
Basically, you upload an image by entering Special:Upload into the search box. You must apply an appropriate license tag. For example, if you are the copyright holder of the image, you can apply a GFDL license tag to the image by entering {{GFDL-self}} in the Summary section. This tags the image with:
- "I, the copyright holder of this work, hereby grant the permission to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation; with no Invariant Sections, no Front-Cover Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts."
The full text for this type of license can be found at: Wikipedia:Text of the GNU Free Documentation License, but basically: "People are required to attribute the work to you, and if they make changes or incorporate your work in their work, they are required to share their changes or work under the same license."
There are other licenses available - see Wikipedia:Image copyright tags. Gram123 (talk) 11:24, 22 November 2007 (UTC)
