Jonesboro High School (Arkansas)

Jonesboro High School is a high school located in Jonesboro, Arkansas and is part of the Jonesboro Public Schools School District.

As of 2007, the school principal is Terry Trotter.

Jonesboro High School is rich in tradition and has served students since the awarding of the first four diplomas in 1899. Since 1924, Jonesboro High School has been a charter member accreditated by the North Central Association (NCA) Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (CASI).

In 1982-1983, Jonesboro High School was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education, one of only six high schools in the state ever to be awarded this honor.

As of 2006-2007, JHS offers the following Advanced Placement (AP) courses: Chemistry, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, Calculus AB, Government & Politics, Biology, Spanish, Studio Art, and World and U.S. History.

JHS offers a variety of clubs to appeal to students with varied interests ranging from clubs that are academically based, such as the foreign language clubs, to honorary organizations (National Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta, and National Honor Society), to leadership (National Student Council, FCCLA FBLA, etc.), sports (ā€œJā€ Club and FCA), drug prevention (PRIDE Youth Program), to those clubs that are sponsored by civic organizations whose general intent is philanthropic.

The current school building was designed by Jonesboro firm Little and Associates. This replaced the original building destroyed by a tornado on May 27th, 1973.

The Jonesboro athletic teams are known as the Golden Hurricane and have enjoyed a lot of success in all three major sports.

The Golden Hurricane have won two Arkansas State Football Championships. The last coming in the sixties. The Hurricane have won several football conference championships. The last coming in 1987. However the Hurricane are one of the most successful programs in the state of Arkansas once being known as part of the Big Eight. The Hurricane in recent years have struggled in football finshing at (2-8) in 2007 which was one of the worst seasons in school history. This led to Head Football Coach Jim Devazier stepping down. The Jonesboro Public School District chose Randy Coleman former coach at cross-town school Valley View to lead the Hurricane football program. The Hurricanes main football rivals are West Memphis High School and cross-town rival Nettleton High School. The West Memphis series is pretty even. However the rivalry with the Nettleton Raiders has gone in favor of the Hurricane. The "Canes" lead the over all series (3-1) with JHS winning most with ease. The series with Nettleton is played at Arkansas State University's home stadium due to the high schools wanting to play the game on a neutral field.

Basketball is where the Hurricane has had a huge amount of success winning a total of 10 Arkansas State Basketball Chmapionships. With the most recent coming in 2007 when the Hurricane defeated AAAAAA East Conference rival Forrest City at the Hot Springs Convention Center. The year before that at the Alltel Arena in Little Rock, Arkansas the Hurricane fell to Little Rock Parkview High School which was a re-match of the 1994 state finals game in which the Hurricane won. The main basketball rivals for the "Canes" are West Memphis High School and Forrest City High School. The Hurricane have won several conference championships. With the most recent coming in 2008 when the Hurricane won the AAAAAA East Conference Championship. The "Canes" as the are known are led by their Head Coach Barry Pruit.

The Hurricane while having never won a state championship in baseball has had many successful baseball teams. The Hurricane made it to the state championship game in 2005. The game was played at the University of Arkansas Baum Stadium. The Hurricane fell to former AAAAAA East Conference mate Sylvan Hills High School. It was the only time the Hurricane have ever made it to the state championship game. However the Hurricane have won several AAAAAA East Baseball Championships with the most recent coming in 2006. The Hurricane's baseball rivals are West Memphis High School and Nettleton High School.

The Hurircane are also highly successful in other sports. Having won several Arkansas State Volleyball Championship. The Track and Field teams also have won multiple conference championships winning back to back AAAAAA East Conference Championships from 2004-2005. Golf and Softball have also been good to the Hurricane as those teams have had several playoff appearances.
