[edit] Playing career

Blum, who grew up in Rancho Santa Margarita, played minor hockey in California before starting his first season with the WHL's Vancouver Giants in 2005-06. In three seasons, he has established himself as an effective offensive defenseman in the WHL while capturing a WHL title in 2006 and a Memorial Cup title in 2007 with the Giants.

Upon winning the Memorial Cup, Blum was selected 23rd overall by the Nashville Predators in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the first California-born player to be drafted in the first round.[1]

In 2007-08, Blum recorded a career high 18 goals and 63 points, finishing second among league defensemen. His offensive production would also set a single-season franchise-record among Giants defensemen for points.

Midway through the season, he also participated in the 2008 World Junior Championships with the USA, finishing fourth.
