Jonathan Maberry (born May 18, 1958) is the multiple Bram Stoker Award-winning author of GHOST ROAD BLUES, the first of the Pine Deep Trilogy, a series of supernatural thrillers published by Pinnacle Books. The series continued with of DEAD MAN’S SONG in 2007; and concluded with BAD MOON RISING (2008).
His next novel will be PATIENT ZERO, a bioterrorism thriller that will launch a new series for St. Martin's Press. Patient Zero introduces action hero Joe Ledger, an emotionally damaged Baltimore detective who gets recruited by a secret government agency, the DMS (Department of Military Sciences) to help stop a group of terrorist who have a plague that can turn people into zombies.
Maberry is a professional writer and writing teacher and since 1979 has sold more than 1100 articles, twenty nonfiction books, six novels, as well as short stories, poetry, song lyrics, video scripts, greeting cards, and two plays.
Maberry is also a nonfiction author of some note. His early books dealt mainly with martial arts and self defense and include Judo and You (Kendall Hunt 1990), ULTIMATE JUJUTSU (Strider Nolan, 2002) and ULTIMATE SPARRING (Strider Nolan 2003). Maberry holds an 8th degree black belt in Shinowara-ryu Jujutsu. In 2002 he was inducted into the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame by the World Head of Family Sokeship Council; and in 2004 was inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame.
In 2008 Maberry and Emmy Award-winner Laura Schrock created ON THE SLAB for ABC Disney Stage 9. ON THE SLAB is an entertainment news show focusing on the horror and science fiction genres that is set to launch on Internet in October 2208.
Maberry departed from martial arts writing and authored a number of books on the folklore and beliefs of the occult and paranormal. His breakout book was Vampire Universe: The Dark World of Supernatural Beings That Haunt Us, Hunt Us and Hunger for Us (Citadel Press, 2006). His newer nonfiction works THE CRYPTOPEDIA: A Dictionary of the Weird, Strange and Downright Bizarre (Citadel, 2007 –winner of the Bram Stoker Award for Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction; co-authored by David F. Kramer). Scheduled nonfiction books include ZOMBIE CSU: The Forensics of the Living Dead (September 2008); THEY BITE! (2009) and VAMPIRE HUNTERS AND OTHER ENEMIES OF EVIL (2010).
Maberry is the Executive Director of The Career Doctor for Writers [1], which provides workshops, classes and editorial services for writers of all genres; and a founding partner of The Writers Corner USA [2], a writers' education center that provides in-person and online classes in both the craft and business of writing. Maberry oversees Writers Corner USA - Global, the division that provides workshops on all aspects of writing, as well as editorial services.
He is a speaker for the National Writers Union, a writing mentor for the Horror Writers Association and the Mystery Writers of America, a member of the International Thriller Writers and president of the NJ-PA Chapter of the Horror Writers Association.
He is a writing teacher and conducts writing workshops for fiction and nonfiction; and tours libraries, bookstores, and writing groups giving his lectures to packed houses.
Maberry is frequent writers conference speaker and has appeared at PennWriters, PhilCon, HorrorFind, BackSpace, Monster Mania, Philadelphia Writers Conference The World Horror Convention, Lunacon, Dragon Con, Wildwood Writers Conference, University of Pennsylvania Writers Conference, and many others. In 2008 he was the keynote speaker for the Write Stuff writers conference in Allentown, PA, (hosted by Greater Lehigh Valley Writers Group) and the Sisters in Crime symposium in New Jersey. His most popular lecture topics are "The Art of the Book Pitch", "Nuts and Bolts of the Writing Business", and "Writing Fight and Action Scenes", though he’s spoken on dozens of themes related to the craft and business of writing, folklore, general business, sales and marketing, and martial arts.
Maberry is a founding partner of The Liars Club, a networking group of professional in publishing and other aspects of entertainment that includes Gregory Frost, Leslie Esdaile Banks, Jon McGoran, Duane Swierczynski, Ed Pettit, Laura Schrock, William Lashner and Kelly Simmons.
