Jonathan Crayford

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jonathan Crayford (b. September 28, 1964 in Lower Hutt, New Zealand) is a composer/multi instrumentalist.

From a musical family of jazz musicians (Father: Terry, piano, Brother: Greg, drums, Nephew: Miles, piano), Jonathan studied classical piano with Sister Henry and learned jazz by ear. Jonathan was performing and recording at the tender age of 14 as a session bass player with NZ's top musicians, including the NZ Symphony Orchestra. After leaving school he worked in the film industry as a composer, being awarded the GOFTA (Guild of Film and Television Awards) for his original film music. His primary talents lie as a jazz musician playing the piano.

During the 1990s he lived and worked in New York playing and recording with Mambo Macoco, Groove Collective, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Bill Ware, Jay Rodriguez, Eddie Bobé and the Dave Binney group. His return to New Zealand in 2000 enabled him to tour and record with Trinity Roots, Cornerstone Roots and Brazilian singer Alda Rezende. He has since carved out a career for himself as a feature artist at events such as 'Womad' in 2007 where he played with drumming legend, Billy Cobham. Jonathan can be heard most Wednesday nights at 'Havana' bar in Wellington, NZ.
