[edit] Career

He began his career with Hartlepool United, before a short spell outside of the professional game with Shepshed Dynamo. He next joined York City where he played for five years. He moved on to Port Vale and it was whilst he was there, he won the first of his 19 caps for the Northern Ireland, playing against Sweden. In 1996 Birmingham City paid £1.5 million pounds for him. Whilst at Birmingham he played in the 2001 Worthington Cup final defeat against Liverpool. Five years at Birmingham ended with a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday. He subsequently appeared for Port Vale, York City and Doncaster Rovers. He ended his league career of over 450 appearances at Carlisle United. In 2003/04 he teamed up with Steve Burr at Hucknall Town, helping them win the Northern Premier League title. He then followed Burr to Northwich along with Danny Mayman at the start of the 2004/05 season, remaining at the club until 2007 before retiring.

McCarthy represented Northern Ireland internationally, winning 19 caps.

Since retiring, McCarthy has started working for BBC Radio Stoke as a match day reporter for Port Vale in August 2007.[1]
