[edit] Career
In the mid 1960s he played in sessions such as an early Arthur Brown single, ("Devil's Grip"). In 1966 Jon Hiseman replaced Ginger Baker in the Graham Bond Organization. In 1968 he formed the "seminal" [1][2] UK jazz rock/progressive rock band Colosseum. Following the split of Colosseum in 1971, he formed Colosseum II featuring Don Airey and Gary Moore.
In between the two versions of Colosseum, Hiseman formed the band Tempest with Ollie Halsall, Paul Williams and Colosseum bandmate Mark Clarke. Allan Holdsworth replaced Halsall before the first album was released.
He has subsequently played in jazz groups, notably with his wife, saxophonist Barbara Thompson, with whom he recorded and produced fifteen currently available albums. Andrew Lloyd Webber, searching for a "sound" for an album to feature his brother Julian on cello, stumbled upon Colosseum II by accident and imported the whole band into his "Variations" project. This started a 10 year relationship with Hiseman's drumming on recordings, TV specials and for the musicals. In 1982 Hiseman built a state of the art recording studio next to his home, and together with the compositional skills of Barbara Thompson produced many recordings for film and TV soundtracks. He is a founding member of the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble, the German based "Band of Band Leaders".
