Jon Blake (broadcaster)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jon Blake (AKA Jonathan Odlum) is an Adelaide-based radio broadcaster who works for Radio FiveAA. Originally from Perth, Western Australia, he has resided in Adelaide since the 1980s and lives in an inner city apartment. He is single and has most recently taken up ownership of a horse named Kenny.

He shares the microphone with Keith Conlon and Tony Pilkington who in turn are supported by the main newsreader Jane Doyle and sports commentator Chris McDermott. The show operates during the 'breakfast shift' and covers current events, breaking news and interviews. Jon Blake has been described as the resident comedian but has been known to take offense to this title and prefers to be described as a broadcaster, infact he mentioned this in an interview with channel 7's Today Tonight in Adelaide.

Commonly referred to as "Blakey", Jon Blake is one of the most clever satirists currently working in Australian Radio.[citation needed] He won an award at the 2006 Commercial Radio Awards for 'Best Station Produced Comedy Segment'. He is considered to have an extremely high IQ level and his vast knowledge of the English language is considered a rarity in the business.[citation needed] A superb speaker with an ability to project his voice in many different guises has enabled Blake to remain a highly sought after talent for advertising and broadcasting.[citation needed] His outgoing personality and sometimes manic behaviour have enabled him to perform in front of camera for TV commercials and also behind the microphone doing radio skits.

[edit] Controversy

"Blakey" has occasionally raised the ire of some listeners due to some comments and jokes that he has broadcast; in one instance, he was charged with defaming a local businessman.[1] . Fellow broadcaster Ken Cunningham has been the recipient of many of Blakey's jokes and is a regular target on his radio skit, Behind Closed Doors. Blakey has made it clear he answers to nobody except the people who pay him his wages. Blakey continues to entertain in his own style. A refreshingly honest individual, Blakey will often verbalise what many in the community secretly think.[citation needed]
