[edit] Programmes
A pilot study began in 2005 involving schools in Western Division, The Gambia, West Africa, to assess the success of the Bikes4Africa programme in advancing education.
The Bikes4Africa programme sends refurbished bikes to African secondary schools to enable students to get to school more easily. The programme also provides skills training for maintenance of the bikes.
[edit] Events
jole rider organises several cycling-related fundraising events to raise money for their programmes. These include:
- jole1000 (aka End2End): a 1000 mile sponsored cycling tour from one end of Great Britain to the other, from John o' Groats to Land's End.
- Bikathon Cornwall: joins the final stage of the jole1000 cycling from the Eden Project to Land's End, both in Cornwall.
- School Baton Relays: following the End2End path, schools across Britain pass a symbolic baton across the country.
- Bikathon Gambia: a 27 mile cycling challenge in The Gambia.
[edit] Funding
The foundation promotes reciprocal relationships between charities and business, involving commercial sponsorship and workplace-centred morale-boosting initiatives.
The first major fund and awareness raising event organised by the foundation was the jole big bike ride (pronounced as jolly big bike ride) in 2006. A cycling event in the United Kingdom and The Gambia, the fundraising principle is based on the model of the London Marathon, supporting a variety of charities.
