Born in the Bronx, New York. His father Juan Acosta was a percussionist who came over from Cuba on a raft and ended up as a touring musician with Latin Jazz artist such as Tito Puentes, Celia Cruz and La Lupe. His mom came from the Puerto Rican Islands.

John started his proper musical training in 1979 at the age of 7 as a Saxophonist and Flautist. As a youth he performed in Carnegie Hall with the P.S. 103 Elementary orchestra. In High School he entered the world of Rap and Rock Music, savoring a taste of Beatles, Blondie, Queen, RUN-DMC, Kurtis Blow and Africa Bambatta. He got into rap music, writing and recording rap demos at home on 2 cassette recorders and a Casio SK-1 sampler. He hung around with the likes of KRS-ONE, Crazy Legs/Rock-Steady Crew, Grand Master Flash and Afrika-Bambatta at the heart of the creation of rap in the Bronx, N.Y.In High School he started playing Acoustic and Electric Guitar. He soon started a band with other Bronx hopefull's by the name of Sticks & Stones and began to journey to the Bohemian world available in the East-Village, Manhattan. He moved to the Village and began recording new intriguing demos now finding support from a patrons' backing and industry connections.

At the time he had met the eclectic Producer-Artist, Carl Stephenson. Carl had worked with Ghetto Boys, Beck, Paula Abdul and Skat Kat. Carl would take cues from Coz and later create masterpieces like Mellow Gold/Beck and Forest for the Trees.Coz then began work on his indi-CD,"FUTURE WORLD CONTROLLER", co-produced by Carl Stephenson and later,"Electric Gaucho".


Coz has Produced tracks for artist such as JUDE/Maverick Records and 1000 Clowns/Elektra Records. He scored a hit in London co-writing on the single, "Not the Greatest Rapper" reaching #11 on the BBC pop charts. He has toured South America and performed at "Les Inrockuptibles Music Festival" in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
