User:John Carter
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John Carter, also known as the wonderful white-winged wiki warrior, welcomes you to his userpage! He hopes you came here for some pleasant reason, but knows there's a good chance you have a reasonable beef with him. Please make any comments reasonably and politely. Also realize that if he has written something outside of article space (or even within it) there is a very real chance that his at best weak grasp of the English language will render some of his comments all but incomprehensible. Hey, on Mars we don't talk as much as fight, it took me a long time to learn their freaking language, and I've been out of practice with English for about a century now. OK?

This editor is an admin on the English wikipedia. If you should have any concerns regarding his conduct and his ongoing qualification as such, please either leave a message on my talk page or start an RfC regarding the dubious conduct.
[edit] Activities
Somehow, this bozo was made the lead coordinator of the Christianity WikiProject, without being struck by lightning, earthquake, or any of the other things he might have expected. On top of that, he still hasn't been struck by the expected lightning, earthquake, or whatever. It looks like a lot of what he was intending to do might be put on hold until things get sorted out a bit better there.
He is still trying to place all the relevant project banners on various articles relating to religion. So, if you're coming here because he placed, for example, the {{Astrology project}} on the Biblical Magi page, but the {{WikiProject Bible}} banner still isn't on the article, please be patient. He's going through the articles project by project, and hopes (?) by the end of the year to ensure that all the relevant religion project banners are on all the relevant articles. Project on the WP:PROJDIR/PR page whose tagging as per categorization I have completed:
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Buddhism
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Church of the Nazarene
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Jainism
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Jehovah's Witnesses
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Kabbalah
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Messianic Judaism
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Rational Skepticism
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Scientology
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Seventh-day Adventist Church
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Japan/Shinto
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Taoism
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Thelema
He is also currently experiencing the "urge to merge" in a big way. Expect to see that template splattered hither and yon on multiple inactive WikiProjects in the near future.

[edit] Biography (Lies about himself)
He is comparatively new to wikipedia, having started by creating missing articles. He has recently moved his attention to the Saints project below where he is working on assessing articles and trying to keep the Portal:Saints (and right now the Portal:Cuba as well) going. He will probably move elsewhere shortly, as he is notorious for his rather extensive travelling. And, yeah, he is occasionally a little homicidally xenophobic, as seen here, but he's working on it, OK? And, anyway, there are worse than me. Like, well, cats. I don't like cats, particularly not homicidal little critters like those shown here.
He does not actually dislike all new people he meets, or immediately try to disembowel them. He is particularly fond of underdressed females, like the ex here. He is also finding the US State Department to be very closed-minded and bureaucratic. He admits his passport is a little old, but that really shouldn't be as much of a problem as it is proving to be. And who cares if he uses the "royal we" too much? He's royalty back on Mars, remember? And he thinks Frank Frazetta does great work, although you probably guessed that by now.
He is actually a Roman Catholic, and considers himself rather knowledgeable regarding that body. Not so much necessarily any other groups, though, so if he really screws something up there just let him know. He does try to learn from mistakes, though the jury's still not in about whether he ever succeeds or not. He is not now, however, and never has been, particularly interested in contributing content to articles regarding beliefs, sacraments, and other matters because they are frankly over his head. Articles about mythology, biography, and Curious George are really more his speed. He joined the Wikipedia:WikiProject Saints because it was the smallest biography project he saw, and he personally finds biographical articles easiest to write. In the interests of fairness and objectivity, he was the one who first proposed that the project actively deal with saints of other Christian traditions, not knowing just how many thousands more that added to the already substantial size of the project. In all honesty, he is beginning to doubt whether that was really one of the best ideas he ever had. Oh, well.
Allegations regarding megalomania are generally responded to with a lunge to the midsection. Subtlety was, after all, never his strongpoint. He is also currently in semi-retirement, and believes that wikipedia has the potential to be one of the best places for the quick and easy exchange of information currently available. On that basis, he feels quite priveleged to be able to assist in the ways at least he thinks he is best able to.
Some factual information (see, you knew he was going to have to say something about himself accurate, right?). His interests lie primarily in the field of biography, which like he said are easy. He did rather well in school, and was found remarkable for his rather well-developed memory. In fact, he scored a 1420 on the United States SAT and was found to have an IQ of 166, although there was a question about whether at least one question, worth I think 5 points, might have been phrased poorly such that he didn't respond correctly. He has also read a lot (and I mean a lot) of not so good fiction, including, surprise surprise, the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs. For someone working with articles on religion, he personally finds Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco to be one of the best introductions to the subject available.
[edit] Heroes in Wikipedia
I've been lucky enough to have contact with some truly exceptional people here. These are some of the ones who most often and frequently come to mind.
- User:Durova - A fine lady who has said that she gets involved in working with some of the more, uh, outspoken members of wikipedia, many of whom seem to have a far better grasp of profanity than standard language. She says she does this to help keep the rest of us from being subjected to the activities of these people, and has demonstrably gone to great efforts to give even these troublesome editors a chance to continue. I know that I am personally very thankful for all her efforts.
- User:Jade Knight - My "adopter". Would you like "adopting" someone who claims to be an interplanetary traveler with a tendency to ogle whatever aliens he doesn't kill first? He has had the good luck of probably having had less contact with me than some of the others, but I remain profoundly greatful for his help.
- User:Kingboyk - I am stunned at the amount of work this individual has given to wikipedia, and to the Biography WikiProject in particular. He has once run for a seat on the foundation board already. I can imagine few people I would prefer to see there.
- User:Pastordavid - One of the first editors I encountered here, and one who has had the at-best dubious pleasure of fairly regular contact with me. One of the most calm, well-informed, and even-handed people I've met. And a great editor who has an unusually high number of FAs and GAs to his credit.
- User:Walkerma - a professor and probably the most active member of the Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team. How he manages to do both frankly escapes me.

[edit] Recognition (possibly excessive)
This image receives first place here just to remind everyone that while I am extremely grateful to all those others who have chosen to recognize me below with what they have given me, I am still rather inexperienced in a lot of ways. I can and do make mistakes, and I know that. If you believe I have made one, you may well be right. None of these awards, grateful for them as I am, necessarily indicate that any statements of opinion or conclusions I might draw are necessarily any better or more informed than anyone else's. And if you're the person who disagrees with me on something, yes, I mean you.

John Carter is hereby awarded this Original Barnstar, for his tireless efforts to make this encyclopedia better. He is undoubtedly one of the best editors on Wikipedia. His terrific work, courtesy, willingness to help and improve, and extremely civil behaviour should act as a reference guide for all aspiring Wikipedians. That's because of editors like you that this project is still going strongly. Have no words, all I can say is thank you. Thank you for being part of Wikipedia. Its funny John but I was also about to give you this award for the multiple assets you give to this encyclopedia. Not only do I greatly appreciate your help and overlooking of the various disputes you've been involved in and somehow managing to keep a cool head, particularly with the Preity Zinta and related issues, but you have earned a great deal of respect from your fellow editors and advice that you give. Aside from this you have put in a huge amount of work "behind the scenes" towards improving the organization and system of the encyclopedia which people should be in debt of gratitude for. Cheers and thankyou for being an honorable wikipedian in this community. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:15, 27 May 2008 (UTC) |
