The military history of Sweden spans over more than a millennium, longer than the stable entity called Sweden has existed. The military history in the region is characterized by the internal wars between first the mythical and later the semi-legendary kings of Sweden, followed by the Viking Age where the vikings living in present day Sweden primarily raided and ravaged Eastern Europe, sometimes as far away as the Black and Caspian Seas. At the end of the Viking Age, the consolidation of Sweden led to internal conflicts between pretenders of the throne. After this, a multitude of wars was fought against the arch enemies of Sweden—namely Denmark, Poland and Russia—between 1521 and 1814. Since then, peace has lasted and the industrialized Sweden has been holding on to its neutrality, only engaging in military conflicts as part of various peacekeeping forces.
