MR MURPHY, AS A SENIOR CADET AT WEST POINT, WAS THE CHAIRMAN OF THE CADET HONOR COMMITTEE, IN CHARGE OF OVERSEEING AND ENFORCING THE CADET HONOR CODE WHICH STATES " CADET WILL NOT LIE, CHEAT, OR STEAL, NOR TOLERATE THOSE WHO DO. CONGRESSMAN MURPHY WAS SUBSEQUENTLY INDICTED JUNE 18 AND THE ONLY MEMBER OF CONGRESS IMPLICATED TO BE AQUITTED OF BRIBERY. STATING CLEARLY ON VIDEO TAPE TO AN AGENT FROM THE FBI "I AM NOT FOR SALE...I DON'T WANT YOUR MONEY". AFTER TESTIMONY BY CONGRESSMAN JOHN MURTHA OF PA, IN EXCHANGE FOR FBI NOT PURSUING AN ACTIVE INDICTMENT AGAINST MR. MURTHA, AND MR. MURTHA ALREADY IMPLICATING HIMSELF, FALSELY TESTIFIED AGAINST MR. MURPHY. AS A RESULT MURTHA WAS CLASIFIED AS AN UN-INDICTED CO-CONSPIRATOR AND MR. MURPHY WAS CONVICTED DECEMBER 3. 1980, OF CONSPIRACY, CONFLICT OF INTEREST, AND ACCEPTING AN ILLEGAL GRATUITY; A CLASS 3 MISDEMEANOR, SENTENCED TO THREE YEARS IN PRISON AND FINED $20,000; RELEASED IN 1985. STILL LIVING TODAY ON STATEN ISLAND, WHERE HE HELPS VETERANS AND SERVES AS A BOARD MEMBER OF JOBS4VETS.ORG A NON PROFIT ORG.
