There is a much told story in my country (New Zealand) that is slowly but surely turning from legend into myth.I have heard many different versions from a lot of people but this seems to be the most verifiable. One day in the late 1970's an elderly woman was was out walking along the shore of her local beach, as she had done every day for decades, when she was suddenly and unexpectedly confonted by the sight of a naked and contented elderly man lying on the beach before her.The man looked very familier. He jumped up and apologised to the woman for his state of undress,but the damage had been done. she was so shocked to see sutch a sight that she quickley exited the beach and went to the local police station to lodge a complaint.The police duly investigated and found that the man was indeed John Le Mesurier, naked and on holiday, but the beach had recently became zoned as a nudist beach so no charges could be layed.I understand that for many years the woman dined on the story that she was "jumped upon" by a naked Sgt Wilson and could never watch Dads Army In The same light again!
