Can't find much about Gilligan on the web, but as he has a tangental connection to my life always been a bit interested in him. I think there may be some books about him and his gang as well as the film Veronica Guerin, maybe they should have been linked to (I don't know what WP policy is on linking to amazon in articles).

I did find this archived article though - in the Irish Post in which he is alleged to have killed my fathers cousin, someone who was very friendly when I was a child and whose company was enjoyed ( he was about 15 years older than me) . It was bit strange seeing that murder reenacted watching the movie. I knew he was a bit of a wide boy but I've often wondered why he was murdered.
