John Engler is the current governor of Michigan. He's in his third term, but because of the recent birth of his triplet daughters, he has decided to not run for a fourth term. His power and electibility stems from the fact that he is Republican AND Catholic. Classically, the state has divided itself politically down the middle, with Republican Protestants centered in the Dutch stronghold of Grand Rapids, lead by the power and wealth of the Amway fortune; and with Democrat (or Socialist, or Communist) Catholics in Detroit and Hamtramack. While the worker's rights socialist bent of Detroit has waned over the years, the east side of the state remains strongly liberal. But as the Polish and Irish Catholics enter into their third or fourth generation they become ensconced in the white middle class of suburbia, which is predominantly Republican. So while Catholics may historically represent a liberal element in Michigan politics, class has over time trumped ethnicity. Thus, John Engler has essentially become unbeatable.

Engler has, for some time now, been the president of the Republican Governors Association, and was instrumental in selecting George W. Bush for the party nomination. He was even rumored to be on the short list for the vice-presidency. But, when Michigan fell to Senator John McCain in the primary, Engler was seen as having failed his own candidate at a key moment.

Nicknames

Could someone check these facts, fill in the dates and generally improve this piece? Will be doing so shortly. First of all, due to a term limits law, he's not eligible to run for a fourth term. The rest of the article is opinion, and will be replaced with hopefully more NPOV material soon.

There was a list of nicknames for this chap given at John Engler/Nicknames, thus:

I don't know if any of them are accurate or of interest. If somebody else does, it may be worth putting them into the article. --Camembert

As a lifelong resident of Michigan, I never heard any of these names used. There were often unpleasant names attached to him briefly, but none stuck. --Dcclark 04:41, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Seal-of-Michigan.png

Image:Seal-of-Michigan.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
