Re: the comment about Dingell's power pre-Gingrich - I normally hate doing an appeal to anonymous authority like that, but on the other hand, as a sometime Congress junkie, there's no doubt in my mind that in the Bush 41 admin. and the first two years of Clinton, Dingell's clout was up there with Foley, Gephardt, Rosty, Moakley and possibly the chair of Appropriations (Whitten or Natcher). If this is disputed, take it out and I'll get down to finding a source. Ellsworth 15:31, 5 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I agree with you. The 'Almanac of American Politics 2000' states that "From 1981-95 Dingell was chairman of...one of the most powerful and effective chairmen ever." It goes on to substantiate that claim. Congressional Quarterly's 'Politics in America 2004' states "As Energy and Commerce chairman, Dingell built a remarkable fiefdom, running the committee with an iron fist and becoming a potent symbol of the Old Bull Democratic chairmen who made life miserable for the minority." It goes on to say "Many Republicans hated his imperious style, but they saw him as a leadership model to emulate when they took control..." mp2dtw 22:42, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A Poem by Mr Dingell (he read this on the senate floor)

Twas the week before Christmas and all through the House

No bills were passed ‘bout which Fox News could grouse;

Tax cuts for the wealthy were passed with great cheer,

So vacations in St. Barts soon would be near;

Katrina kids were nestled all snug in motel beds,

While visions of school and home danced in their heads;

In Iraq our soldiers needed supplies and a plan,

Plus nuclear weapons were being built in Iran;

Gas prices shot up, consumer confidence fell;

Americans feared we were on a fast track to…well…

Wait--- we need a distraction--- something divisive and wily;

A fabrication straight from the mouth of O’Reilly

We can pretend that Christmas is under attack

Hold a vote to save it--- then pat ourselves on the back;

Silent Night, First Noel, Away in the Manger

Wake up Congress, they’re in no danger!

This time of year we see Christmas every where we go,

From churches, to homes, to schools, and yes…even Costco;

What we have is an attempt to divide and destroy,

When this is the season to unite us with joy

At Christmas time we’re taught to unite,

We don’t need a made-up reason to fight

So on O’Reilly, on Hannity, on Coulter, and those right wing blogs;

You should just sit back, relax…have a few egg nogs!

‘Tis the holiday season: enjoy it a pinch

With all our real problems, do we honestly need another Grinch?

So to my friends and my colleagues I say with delight,

A merry Christmas to all,

and to Bill O’Reilly…Happy Holidays.

[edit] Quotes

I took it out because it was entirely out of context. If you want to add a paragraph to the main article, then do so. But please, no dangling quotes.

[edit] POV

I added the POV tag to the environmental performance section. The only reference for the substantial paragraph that uses words such as "craven" is a WSJ editorial...not the best source. I'd point to this week's editorial in Science that described Dingell's environmental performance/consistency as less than stellar. Also, I object to the statement regarding the automobile industry shouldering an "unfair" burden vis-a-vis global warming--automobiles create substantial amounts of GHGs. Also the section "private sector ties" had been removed by the suspicious omission of a slash. I've rectified this. -- Autumninjersey 22:24, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

I agree, and I re-wrote the last paragraph to leave in the relevant information while removing the POV and weasel words. 131.104.202.92 (talk) 16:23, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Bias?

I read this page and with the exception of hinting to his ties with the auto industry, the page seemed like it was written by one of his staff.

I mean "He is known by the friendly nickname, "Big John."" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.38.184.205 (talk) 15:30, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
