Talk:Johannite
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
To call them Christians who don't believe in Christ doesn't make sense. Christians necessarily believe in Christ. Otherwise, they wouldn't be christians. I have therefore changed:
"The Johannites are a sect of Gnostic Christians who reject Jesus Christ, and instead posit that the true savior of the world (sent to fulfill Old Testament prophecy) was in fact John the Baptist, as he was performing baptisms before Jesus' birth."
To: "The Johannites are a sect of Gnostic who reject Jesus Christ, and instead posit that the true savior of the world (sent to fulfill Old Testament prophecy) was in fact John the Baptist, as he was performing baptisms before Jesus' birth."

[edit] Do they reject Christ?
This article has a contradiction - in the first sentence of the article, it states that the Johannites reject Christ. In a later paragraph it states that it is a misconception that they reject Christ. I do not know the answer to this, but perhaps someone will clarify and correct this. I have added this article to the cleanup list.

As stated on the Apostolic Johannite Church's website, on their Statement of Principles:
We affirm that God guides us towards Unity by the loving example of the Incarnate Xristos, manifested in the life of Jesus, and the ongoing experience of the Holy Spirit as the source of continued Inspiration and Revelation via Gnosis.
Therefore it is incorrect to say that they reject Jesus in ANY way. Nor can I find any implication that Johannites view John the Baptist as the Savior that many assume Jesus to have been. Yes, the Church gets its name from John, but not in this sense.

I'm starting to think that this page is a bit of fanciful mythmaking, possibly by the author of the book whose (now dead) link appears at the bottom. It certainly doesn't apply to the Apostolic Johannite Church, and I don't think it applies to any verifiable Johannite tradition. Wbehun 17:09, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Merger
I am taking down the merge suggestion due to the lack of support and credible suggestions as to the major error it would constitute. Gabrielthursday 10:16, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
