[edit] He was knighted.

This President of the Orange Free State was the only one to be knighted. He was known as 'Sir John Brand' in English, therefore his title 'Sir' should be added, even though the Orange Free State was independent, albeit, under British suzerainty. - (202.68.89.4 08:14, 7 November 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Overhaul of text necessary

The text as copied from the Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition seems overtly patriotic from a British point of view, and therefore academically less useful. The whole text needs to be overhauled with the use of new sources. Michel Doortmont (talk) 10:55, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
