[edit] Overview
Made in tribute to popular tokusatsu superhero shows like Kamen Rider, this series has similarities to the 1967 independent film Fearless Frank (which starred actor Jon Voight in the title role), which was also a parody and dark deconstruction of the superhero genre, only Johnny Robo satirizes Japanese superhero conventions (particularly the Henshin Hero). Filmed with no sound, the characters spoke using title cards, not unlike old silent films. And just like silent films, only solo-piano music is heard. The first 7 episodes were filmed in black & white, whereas the opening credits, the final episode and all of Johnny Robo 2, were shot in color. The surf-rocking guitar theme song was performed by Lincoln Money Shot.
