John Young Parkway

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Young Parkway is a four- and six-lane surface road in the U.S. state of Florida. Running from near Campbell, Florida, through Kissimmee to northwestern Orlando, it serves as an alternate to the parallel Orange Blossom Trail.

The original section of John Young Parkway was built by the Florida Department of Transportation in the early 1970s, from Colonial Drive (SR 50) west of downtown Orlando north to Orange Blossom Trail (US 441-SR 500) at Lee Road. It was assigned the number SR 423 and named after John Young, an astronaut from the Orlando area.

Over the years, extensions to the south have been built, some by Orange County and some by the state. Additionally, Osceola County extended it south to meet the existing Bermuda Avenue in Kissimmee. An additional extension is planned which will bring John Young Parkway northward from Orange Blossom Trail at Lee Road to meet the west end of SR 434.

Around 2000, Bermuda Avenue and Orange Blossom Trail in Kissimmee were renamed to John Young Parkway. Now John Young Parkway ends at the Kissimmee city limits, a bit north of the intersection with Pleasant Hill Road, where the older Orange Blossom Trail name continues. The section from US 192 southward is also numbered US 17-92.

The SR 423 designation continues west past Orange Blossom Trail as Lee Road, and southward to end at Church Street. South past Church Street, it is known as Orange County Road 423. In Osceola County from the county line to US 192, it is known as County Road 531A, though that designation is hidden. South of US 192, it picks up all of US 17-92's hidden designations.
