John West (cricketer)

John West was a first class cricketer. He was a left arm fast round arm bowler and left handed batsman who played 38 games for Yorkshire CCC between 1868 and 1876, 13 games for MCC between 1869 and 1883 and one for the "Left Handed" against the "Right Handed".

His best bowling, 7 for 42, came against Hampshire CCC and he also recorded a remarkable spell of 5 for 3 against Surrey CCC. In all he took 5 wickets in an innings on 5 occasions and 75 wickets in all at just 14.62. A confirmed tail ender, he scored 605 runs at 8.52 with a best of 41 in the Roses Match against Lancashire CCC.

After retiring from the game he became a first class umpire, standing in at least 65 matches. He umpired in a Test Match on 5th July 1886 when England played at Old Trafford.

He was born on 16th October 1844 in Little Sheffield, Yorkshire and died there on 27th January 1890.
