John Watson (Bishop)

Bishop John Watson Bishop of Winchester He was born in Evesham, England in 1520, the son of Thomas Watson and Agnes Weeks. This Thomas Watson was the builder of the Tudor house in Bengeworth-Evesham which was the Bishop's family home. The building, which is now much modified,is the present day Evesham Arms Hotel.

On 7 February 1557/58 he was Collated to the Chancellorship of St Pauls Cathedral, London. In 1559 he was appointed Archdeacon of Surrey.
He was buried on the 17 FEB 1583/84 in the Nave of Winchester Cathedral, adjoining the 8th. bay of the North aisle 1
His will dated 22 OCT 1584 was proved citing Sir Francis Walsingham as Chief Overseer 1 2 Event: Degree1 JUN 1539 Bachelor of Arts, Oxford 1 Event: Degree2 1540 Elected Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford 1 Event: Degree3 25 JUN 1544 Master of Arts 1 He graduated as Doctor of Medicine at Oxford 27 JUL 1573 1 2

Note: Burial Stone of John Watson, Bishop The burial stone of Bishop Watson is in Winchester Cathedral on the north side of the nave in the 5th, bay westward from the tower pillars. It is of a shelly limestone polished to resemble marble. The inscription is:-
