John V. Lombardi is the President of the Louisiana State University System, replacing the retired System President William Jenkins.

He was formerly Chancellor and Professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Lombardi was born in Los Angeles, California in 1942. He earned his bachelor's degree from Pomona College and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University.

Lombardi taught in the history department at Indiana University from 1967 through 1987. He served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Johns Hopkins University from 1987 through 1990. From 1990 through 1999 he served as President of the University of Florida. Dr. Lombardi is a specialist in Latin American history, and has written several books on that subject.

Lombardi left a lasting impact on the Gators athletic program, widely regarded as one of the worst in the Southeastern Conference prior to his arrival. Among those hired during Lombardi's tenure included:
