John Tremayne

John Tremayne (15 April 1825–1901) was a politician who sat as a Conservative for the East Cornwall Constituency from 1874 until he was defeated in 1880. He then sat for South Devon from 1884 to 1885 [1].

[edit] Parental family

He was born 15 April 1825, the son of John Hearle Tremayne and Caroline Lemon, his wife. His mother's brother was Sir Charles Lemon, who left his estate at Carclew to John Tremayne's brother, Arthur. His other siblings, Henry, Mary and Harriet married other gentry or noble families.

He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford [2].

[edit] Heligan

With his son, Jack, he further developed the gardens at the Heligan estate, which he inherited in 1851. During the 20th Century, the gardens were neglected. They were restored and are now open to the public as "The Lost Gardens of Heligan". He also inherited an estate at Sydenham in Devonshire.

[edit] Marriage and children

In 1860, he married the Hon. Mary Charlotte Vivian, daughter of Lord Vivian of Glynn [3]. They had two sons, Perys Edmund, born 1866, died 1867, and John Claude Lewis, known as "Jack", born 1869, and three daughters. John Claude married Eleanor, the daughter of Jonathan Rashleigh of Menabilly. They later divorced; no children resulted from this marriage [1].

In addition to his parliamentary service, he was a JP and in 1859, High Sheriff of Cornwall [1]. He served as Chairman of the North Cornwall Railway Company [4].

He died in the spring of 1901 at Biarritz [4]
