John Tohill

The Most Reverend John Tohill D.D. (1855-1914) was an Irish Roman Catholic Prelate and 26th Lord Bishop of Down and Connor.

He was born in Gortmacrane on 23rd December, 1855. He studied Classics at Tirgarvil School and in the Vicinage (now St. Malachy's College) and entered Maynooth College on 21st September, 1875.

He was appointed professor in the Diocesan College in Belfast before he was ordained by His Lordship Dr Patrick Dorrian, (Who was then the Bishop of Down and Connor), on 22nd September, 1878.

After a year as curate at Dunsford, he was re-appointed to the Diocesan College and in 1908, following the death of Dr Henry was consecrated 26th Lord Bishop of Down and Connor. He died suddenly 4th July 1914.
