John Smoke Johnson

Chief John Smoke Johnson (December 2 or 14, 1792August 26, 1886) or Sakayengwaraton (also known as Smoke Johnson), was a Mohawk leader. Johnson participated in the War of 1812.

Smoke Johnson was born in 1792, the son of Jacob Tekahionwake Johnson (July 16, 1758December 1, 1843). Jacob was the son of Molly Brant and Sir William Johnson.

Smoke married the matriarch Helen Martin (1798March 27, 1866). He was father to seven children: Mary, Aaron, Joseph, William, Margret, Susannah and George Henry Martin (Onwanonsyshon). George Henry Martin was the father of the well-known poet Emily Pauline.[1]
