John Smeaton Community College is a state school for 11-18 years olds in between Scholes, Crossgates, Barwick-in-Elmet, Pendas Fields and Swarcliffe, in Leeds. It has an extensive range of courses for 6th form and visitors. There has recently been the need to reconstruct the school, in association with Leeds City Council and a privately owned business. The new school building, just past where the old one was situated, boasts brand new facilities, whilst the old site is currently being transformed into a Car Park for the school and Neighbouring John Smeaton Leisure Centre.
The school was re-opened by Scot, John Smeaton, made famous as a hero during the attempted terrorist attack on Glasgow Airport, however, he should not be confused with the school's namesake, 18th Century Civil Engineer John Smeaton of Austhorpe, Leeds.
