John Sherrill Houser is an American painter and sculptor who was born in Rapid City, South Dakota in 1935. His father, Ivan Houser, was the first assistant to Gutzon Borglum in the early years of carving Mount Rushmore. John grew-up in Portland, Oregon and on the family ranch in Pendleton, Oregon. In 1958, he earned a BA in Art and Natural Sciences from Lewis and Clark College (Portland, Oregon). He then pursued graduate studies in art at the University of California, Los Angeles. John continued his studies in Spain and Italy. He is assisted by his son, Ethan Taliesin Houser.

John Houser’s most important commission is for The XII Travelers Memorial, a series of twelve monumental historical bronze sculptures in El Paso, Texas. This unfinished project is the first regional memorial of its kind in the United States. The artist’s 42 feet high statue of Juan de Oñate is the largest equestrian bronze in the world.
