Senator John S. Edwards (born 6 October 1943 (not to be confused with 2004 Vice-Presidential hopeful John Edwards) is an American politician from Virginia.

[edit] Early Life & Education
Edwards was born in Roanoke, Virginia on October 6, 1943. He attended the Patrick Henry High School, and then Princeton University (A.B., 1966, cum laude), the Union Theological Seminary in New York, and the Rockefeller Brothers Theological Fellowship (1966-67). Edwards then attended the University of Virginia law school (J.D. 1970).

John Edwards was a member of the USMC from 1971-1973, where he was a captain.

Senator Edwards is a Lutheran.

Edwards is a partner in his law firm. Previously he was a Councilman and Vice-Mayor in the City of Roanoke. Edwards was also named Roanoker magazine's Roanoker of the year in 1995.
Edwards was elected to the Virginia General Assembly in 1996, to represent the 21st District. His legislative assistant is Alison Baird. In the Virginia Senate, Senator Edwards is on the committees of Commerce and Labor, Courts of Justice, and Education and Health.
Edwards has been mentioned by some as a possible successor to current Democratic Governor Timothy M. Kaine.
